Hello
This is a follow up to my build preparation post:
https://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=29990.0
Finished my build of Weber's Smokin Joe I. Started with a corporate SS amp with a 6" speaker. De-gutted and kept the chassis and the cabinet. The picture of the original is on the previous post. Got rid of some the labeling with a little finger nail polish. The biggest challenge here was getting the layout to fit a 9-7/16 x 4-7/16 x 2 chassis. Soldering in those tight spaces was tricky too.
My implementation follows Weber's design, with the only exception of a bypass cap selector. Added a 3 way positional switch to either select:
* No bypass cap
* a 25 µF bypass cap
* a .68 µF bypass cap
I'm stunned, it's a great amp. I truly thought it was going to be a one trick pony. The voicing switch adds to its versatility.
Hope everyone has a great week-end.

Very cool - I love the way you repurposed that SS chassis and cab.
I built a SJ-1 many years ago. I used a 5E3 chassis because the standard Weber chassis for that amp is small and has the board right above the tube sockets. I used a tube rectifier and 3x16uf filtering. I also added some boost switching like you did.
I liked it, but like big bottles better, so I rebuilt it with a 6L6 and added a Framus mid control. It has a 10" alnico blue frame speaker that Mojo used to sell - Its great.
I think Weber came up with some cool amp ideas back in Ted's days. I still intend to build a SE amp with an 807 tube mostly following their spec, although I suspect it'll sound just like the 6L6 amp. But it'll look mad scientist cool. :laugh:
Enjoy that amp!

Use an EF36 on the front end for more Frankenstein mad scientist vibe. Paging Frau Blucher. :icon_biggrin:

Ooh, good idea. I think I even have one from a Filmosound, what a fitting tie to Young Frankenstein.
