I could of sworn that I had an account here, but every login failed, so I signed up using the same name and email I usually use for forums. Not sure what happened, maybe an inactive acct that got purged, maybe I'm misremembering. To paraphrase my wife, "Irregardless..."
Anyways, I have purchased a tube amp kit and parts for another amp over 10 years back that I never started or finished. Mostly out of fear of high voltage and not really understanding WHAT I was doing. I realized I didn't just want to follow the directions and connect wire A to turret 1, etc. So, I've been slowly educating myself. I started with the 2 Van Valkenburgh book series (Basic Electricity and Basic Electronics) and a bunch of stuff is suddenly making sense.
I'm in Portland, OR and there are some pretty good folks locally to learn from. Matt Dawson at Dawson Amp Repair has been hosting building and lecture classes. Last June I signed up for a 2 day tube theory lecture with Eddie Pletka from Eurotube who imports the JJ tubes from Slovak Republic. More recently, I signed up for a class at Dawson with local builder Chris Benson to build his "Rosy" amp using a custom wound output transformer from Bryan Sours at SourSound next door. This class happens in a month, and I am excited.
I'm currently digesting the "Truth About Vintage Amps" podcast from Fretboard Journal and staying curious. I've found some low powered old PA's or extension amps for reel-to-reel decks that are tube based with circuits similar to Fender Champs that I am looking to restore.
I find this place to be a wealth of information, so I'm glad I've come back and already have an answer to a rectifier question I had. Thanks! - Mike
