Title: Hardware Mounting
Post by: Nathan on February 14, 2024, 11:13:39 am
Hey guys, I recognize that this is a little bit off topic, but wondering what you all use to secure your transformers, tube sockets, etc.

Yes I know that almost anything which does the job will be fine, but curious if there are some standard sizes or types that you all prefer?

I already have good standoffs for my G10 board but missing most of the other stuff before I get to finalizing my layout and drilling my chassis...

Thanks!

I use #4, #6 or #8 machine screws, depending on what I am attaching, with nylok nuts, for everything possible. I will occasionally also use a washer with those but the tight clearances often don't leave enough room for washers.

#4 for 9-pin sockets, generally #6 for everything else. Transformers are usually #8 & I try to always use washers for the heavy stuff.

For standoffs, I use the typical female-both-ends kind with machine screws, & use a partial drop of Loctite on each screw. Haven't had any issues with loosening or disassembly when needed.

Xfmrs, #10-32 screws & keps nuts for  the larger parts, or #8-32 for smaller / lighter parts.

Cap clamps, #6-32 screws & keps nuts

Sockets & terminal strips, #4-40 screws & keps nuts or hollow plated brass rivets.

#6 was standard for all small parts. 8 or 10 for heavy stuff.

I don't recall much #4 in tube work.

That is where I started, but the 9-pin sockets are much happier with #4, at least with the ones available these days.

#6 is my go-to for most stuff. Earlier on, I bought stand-offs, nyloks, etc. in #8, but really don't use many.

Oh.. and if you happen to have some really large, heavy xfmrs, use 1/4"-20 or 1/4"-24 screws & nuts.
