Title: 6g7-A Blond Bandmaster build/MV/Mid without trem
Post by: bullkelp on May 23, 2024, 04:21:25 pm
Hi all
Been a while between posts...

Im contemplating a brownface/blond surf amp based around the 6g7a. Showman has proven too big for me when ive owned a black face one before. Bandmaster is a good size.

I have a suitable chassis and basic skills. Ive built a princeton reverb, a 6g15 reverb and modded a few things here and there.

What Im wondering is if anyone can help illuminate me on the schematic for a non tremolo 6g7a, single input for each channel and utilising the unused trem depth/intensity pots to shuffle around to accomodate and mid control and a master volume. IM happy even to go to one channel (the bright fendery one that would usually be the vibrato).

Im sure some will say the harmonic trem is the major charm of that amp, but In the interest of a less complex circuit im happy to forgo it. I also dont use trem at all live and im happy with a pedal for the times I want it at home.

Anyhow, not sure if this is feasible or sensible but Im sure you are the correct crowd to inform me!

Thanks

Whoa ! That was quick  :worthy1:

And if I wanted to keep the normal channel as well would operate within the same master volume set up ?

I’d also like to ask of the forum wisdom , does dropping such a lot of circuit from an amp, have an over all effect on tone ?
I.e does the vibrato circuitry add something to the over all tone of that channel, even if not engaged ?

Two channels. Must use 220K mixing resistors just before the MV.

Yes it does. The modulator circuit is always in the signal path even when the vibrato is turned off. I ain't doing another drawing.   :icon_biggrin:

You could make one channel like the 6G7A normal channel and the other like the 6G7 "center volume" normal channel. I've done a preamp section like that. Both turned out to be useful and can be jumpered. No schematic or layout though, I'm afraid.

The vibrato filters + PI maybe feels a little overkill without the vibrato.

Just an opinion, of course!

I’m just trying to find what’s going to be most useful for a brown face flavoured surf set up. Currently I gig with a 6g6b blonde bassman which is wonderful but it’s not built to resemble a fender surf amp. I have a chassis for a blonde bandmaster to use. Actually I was put off the trem when I couldn’t find a 10meg RA this side of the equator (I’m in nz) … but I’ve just sourced some!

I’ve always liked the sound of the vibrato channel on deluxe reverbs, bassman, tremolux amps so I suspect the same would hold true for the 6g7a …. So maybe I keep the trem and sacrifice the normal channel pots for MV and tone ??
