I used to be in politics. I worked for several candidates and one federal administration. I also worked on some initiative petition efforts. I left that all behind about 40 years ago. (I'm a bit over 70 now) I left it because I had conservative friends and liberal friends - good friends. Liberals called the conservatives assholes and idiots; conservatives call liberals assholes and idiots. None of my friends were assholes or idiots. They just had different beliefs, values, and goals.
I urge people I know and like to not fall into the same trap. It's useless. I can assure you that elective politics is all cynical on both sides. Everything either side is saying is pure BS. Getting elected is the only goal.
This country and world is headed for a very dark place no matter who wins. Its a tragedy that I wish the next generations did not have to go through.

I'm with bmccowan on one thing. Reading this thread is a disappointment.
Personally, I prefer progressive policies over conservative policies. Always have. But I know that other people hold different views from me. I'm fine with that. That diversity of views makes America stronger. I respect yours and you respect mine, right?
That said, I really hate to read comments like those here attacking a certain female candidate. They were almost gleefully mean, and juvenile. To disagree with a woman candidate by calling her a prostitute? When did that become adult behavior?
How about we all keep our political discussions strictly in the realm of ideas? Let's support our positions with facts. Let's disagree over policies instead of making personal attacks.

Like some others on the site, I am a moderate. You might not like that, and you might call me a lefty, but that's what I've been for ages, and I'm proud of my beliefs.
I do think both bmccowan and lectroid have valid points, and deserve respect. Of course you have the right to disagree. But both of these guys have contributed to this website for years and have earned their respect, at least from me.
I personally think the real threats we face as a country come from outside -- Russia, China, and Iran.

There's so much misinformation and shit being slung, there's no common sense or purpose anymore. That folks lack the critical thinking component to separate the wheat from the chaff is largely I think, a failing of the educational system. People like easy solutions and subscribe to conspiracy theories as it's easy for them. I'm not sure that Bill O'Reilly is a journalist, more like a commentator for the right and Tucker, well he's just a fucking ass-clown. Kamala Harris may not be qualified in some people's estimation to be president but she's damn sure more qualified than her opponent, who babbles on about windmills and water circling the drain.
I heard recently a US politician giving a commencement speech to a graduating class somewhere saying that China and the USA need to communicate and collaborate to solve probably the most pressing issue facing us at present-the climate. I found out it was Bernie Sanders, still made sense but the message would be completely discounted by the right because of the source. This is a sure guarantee of failure on this and many other issues. What happens in your country affects the whole world for better or lately, worse.
Socialism is such a dirty word in the US, but a little wouldn't hurt, perhaps giving universal healthcare to everyone. You basically have two right wing parties in your country, one just more than the other.

No, actually she definitely was given the job as border czar by Biden. There are dozens of clips of her being called the border czar by the left news shows for several years in the Biden presidency.
Vox is a far left media site. They along with all the other far left and left media sits/shows are all now saying the same thing in unison, that she was never the border czar. And these same far left sites have dozens of clips calling her the border czar over several years. They are now trying to re-write the story line. They are covering for her.
What happens here is someone from the 'top' sends out a text/email to the left and then that day they all say the same thing almost word for word. It's rigged. Happens all the time. Weekly.
And the numbers on illegals entering the country are only lower on paper. They are not even able to document all that are coming in, understaffed, plus those that are using the Biden immigration app are not being counted and the government is also flying in people directly.
And the people are not coming here for the most part because of 'problems' in there country as much as they are coming here because when they get here the government gives them free housing, free food, money, free health care, etc. If the government would stop doing that, they'd stop coming. And there coming from all over the world.
Why are they coming to the US in such large numbers and not to Canada? Canada has universal healthcare.

Secondly, up until covid hit, Trump had the country's economy running great, something like 50 year low unemployment, lowest black, lowest brown and lowest women's unemployment all time. Salaries were going up. Energy was down, people were able to save some money again, etc.
With Biden/Harris policies, record inflation, high energy costs, record credit card debt, very high interest on loans, well over 10 million illegals came in, that's just the 1s they know about, etc.

Did you read those links? It says that Biden/gov has been flying in immigrants. Said ~1million at the time of the article, March 6, 2024, so more by today's date. They cooking the books, their not counting those and the others I said in the influx numbers their giving out. So it looks like illegal immigration has gone down, but it hasn't.
And factcheck.org leans left. And even they back up a lot of what I said about Trump. All bets are off when it comes to the economy once covid hit. And the interest rate was down to ~2.5%, so you could buy a house, car, start a business. Can't do that now.
And they don't mention that they 1st post the employment numbers, then latter they give a revised number. With Biden, the revised numbers were always significantly lower than the 1st reported number. But the press/media would never mention the lowered revised numbers. Month after month they would report a higher number than what was actual. That made the economy/job market look like it was getting better than it was. Just another way they were covering for Biden. But you probably never heard of the monthly lowered revised numbers did you? That's how that works, the press covered it up for the Dem's. They did the same for Obama.
What Trump was able to do with our economy before covid and would have continued to get stronger/better was solid.
And he was able to do that while the Dem's and media/press were hammering him, hounding him daily. They falsely impeached him twice during that time.

as stated earlier facts are malleable, we each have our version of truth, what is needed is a common agreement of "standards" by which we operate, that used to be called the Constitution. now 1/2 the population wants to "interpret" that based on pixie dust of the moment!
the easiest example is 2A, "Thou shall NOT infringe..." yet, there are hundreds of; except here and there and everywhere "infringements".....
i've followed every permeation of "how do we as a society get back to an agreeable set of standards" and they all lead back to "factory Reset"

started using Brave on win-7, went on a kill google campaign with that computer, succeeded, only to have Microsoft add a disclaimer "This PC is no longer running valid software" :laugh:

I just changed my default search engine to DuckDuckGo and did a few searches to how Woke it was

You can use the Brave search engine from any browser.
Google is better for everyday lookups (who sells this and that, what are these sores on my junk, etc.)
But, all things politics & government, back up your searches somewhere else.

repeat couple times a day no more than 20 minutes on each repeat
no i'll wander Lowes from an hour, pester my auto-parts guys for oddities I need to buy, my bullet store, the diner, the neighbors, life IS better lived in real-time :icon_biggrin:

You say that America’s in danger, and you have your list of grievances, and your certainties, but neither of you (or any other poster) explains or expands on even one of your allegations. If you can't offer proof, why should anyone take you seriously? You don’t connect any dots, you see?
I really do not recognize the scary country you describe, either. I don’t live there, not even close. I live in bright-red rural Virginia. Immigrants are not mass-murdering anybody here. Most of my neighbors are conservative, farm-stock, mostly Republicans and yet somehow, we all get along. Our streets are safe, our schools are good, our town services are great, and the taxes we pay for them are low. None of my friends scattered around the country seem to live in that horrible place either. Are you sure it’s not just in your imagination?
America is doing okay. We are not a hotbed of conspiracies and secret cabals. For the most part, we are a prosperous, healthy, educated, mobile, and tolerant culture. Not perfect, no, but good. Violent crime has been dropping for years. Inflation is going down, paychecks are getting bigger. Unemployment is at 4.3%, what economists regard as “full employment.” Our state and national governments are not hopelessly corrupt either, from what I see. I’ve spent time in central Mexico, and the US is a paradise of honesty compared to what I witnessed down there.
But if you prefer doom and gloom, and want to believe the Ultimate Apocalypse is coming soon, good on you. I never expected to change any minds here. I just wrote in to see if you might be willing to refrain from dumbass name-calling like eight-year olds. And I got my answer: a resounding “No!” One post claimed such insults were fully justified because … wait for it … the danger to America is too dire for any less scathing a response:
