Title: It's Rodent Roundup time.
Post by: EL34 on October 29, 2024, 01:16:17 pm
It's Rodent Roundup time.
I hand out peanuts to the locals every day.
I get quite a large crew here most days.
This video shows a few of the chipmunks and squirrels that stop by daily.

I have a herd of "Nut-muffins" - chipmunks, they winter over in my wood piles both inside and outside the barn.  They share with a handful of red squirrels.  the Fox, gray, and black squirrels play car roulette between my park-yard and the neighbors oak grove.

They'll all taste much better than woodchuck should I find myself in hard times  :icon_biggrin:

About 40+ years ago I was out of work so I took a "seasonal" job at a State park in RI. My main job was
watering the grass on the park's 9 hole golf course. The old timer that ran the clubhouse use to feed the critters.
There was a squirrel named Charlie and a chipunk names Alvin. They would both come up on the porch and take
their peanuts right out of his hand! But, they would NOT do it with anyone else!

I got tons of cat squirrels around my house but they generally keep their distance. I think I mightbuy some raw peanuts and give it a try

now that most of the leaves are down, I went looking for nests, the 100 year old maple I have has 2, 3 more in the swamp next door, need to glass across the street, looks like 2 more.

they've when Dormant for now, expect they'll show in another couple weeks to scrounge a meal then back to bed.

Any suggestions to keep ground squirrels away?
Have been using onions and cayenne
Just read that ammonia soaked rags at the burrow might help.

They just destroy the yard.
So I would like them to move somewhere else

astatically sure, but they "churn" up the soil, aerate, and fertilize

you have what I know about, maybe watch Cattddy-shack for some more tips n ideas  :icon_biggrin:

they been here 35 years even with up to 15 barn cats, they seem to "know how" to maintain a population, i've never had large herds leaving them alone.

Never seen white squirrels before, pretty cool! The squirrels do no harm to my property, it's the Armadillos that make a mess and even worst are the Feral Hogs make a really big mess. I've been hit twice by them,

If I can remember I'm going to get some raw un-shelled peanuts and try to interest my cat squirrels. The are usually very skidish and won't let you get very close, but I'll give it a shot. May need Doug to come down to break the ice :icon_biggrin:
