Title: Compact pedal recommendations - Overdrive vs. Distortion
Post by: GuitarPilot65 on January 17, 2025, 06:13:04 pm
I have a vintage Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus (the big one with the 18-v DC adapter), and a Boss DD-6 digital delay. Love them both.
I bought a Boss Waza Blues Driver last year and it doesn't break up quite as I'd hoped.
I'm looking for recommendations for a versatile overdrive/distortion pedal, preferably a Boss compact pedal (I'm on a tight budget). Something with the grind of "Limelight" by Rush, and with additional boost such as "Earthshine" also by Rush.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Are you using the amps in your signature, the Vibrolux and Deluxe Reverb?

I would recommend a DemonFX King of Drive, its a clone of the Analogman King of Tone, its good for the price and has taken over my overdrive recently, I'm using it all the time now

It has two overdrives so one can be set to boost etc, the circuit seems to be 2x marshall blues breaker circuits inside, with switches on each to set for boost/overdrive/distortion

I totally understand your frustration -- having been there, done that, though I think with different objectives (I'm more of a Klon guy).

I think your best bet is to search That Pedal Show for some answers.

Go to Youtube.  In the search box, type in "That Pedal Show overdrive"  -- there are a number of videos where Dan and Mick demo various options.

There's a whole lot of stuff you can sort out with that show.

1st place I go for pedals.

There is no answer to your question.  Alternatively there are +/-1500 answers to your question.  Youtube has tons of video's.

I appreciate That Pedal Show, but for me they play way too much when demonstrating tones.  This makes it difficult for me to A/B the different tones; and turns what could be a 15 minute demo into a 1 hour+ marathon.

There's not necessarily a one pedal solution.  Dirt pedals can be stacked.  Lately I'm using: Blues Driver (Keeley Modded) > Wampler Tumnus (Klon clone) > Friedman Dirty Shirley pedal (MIAB) > clean backline amp (maybe at edge of breakup).  Ea pedal has bit of dirt and a bit of volume boost.  These pedals can be used one at a time or in combination.

That said, if you don't like the Blues Driver, maybe try a Tubescreamer.  I too dislike a BD into a Fender amp.  But into a Marshall it's heavenly.
