Title: GK 800 RB Speaker Mute Switch
Post by: dpm309 on February 03, 2025, 03:32:04 pm
Want to install a speaker mute switch in a Gallien Krueger 800 RB. If I installed it on the front panel near the power switch, will there be any issues with hum etc since this would put it next to the toriodal power transformer? Or would it be better to install it on the left side of the chassis (opposite side from the PT0) The schematic is too large to post but there is a copy in Doug's schematic library.
Thanks,Dan

speaker only or you just want to mute amp?

I'd be inclined to try a gator-clip test if you just want to silence the amp

The goal is to eliminate the popping noise when turning on and off. Kind of like a standby switch for the speakers. My GK 400RB does not pop like the 800RB does. It also has a tuning mute switch that acts like a speaker mute. I'll try the gator clip test.
Thanks,

Installed a DPDT switch and mounted it on the left side of the amp, away from the PT. Works great with no hum. Had to use a DPDT switch since there are two sets of speaker outs and the switch silences both outputs.
