Title: Should I paint the Inside AND outside of Cabinet?
Post by: roboDNA on November 10, 2025, 03:50:59 pm
Hello,

I'm building a 6G15 cabinet and painted the whole thing mat black using premium indoor acrylic water based wall paint.

Is it better to just paint the inside or both the inside and out?  I looks much better fully painted but I'm not sure if the paint affects how well the tolex glue will adhere for the long run.  I read somewhere water based paints such as the one I'm using will not be a problem at all since the tolex glue is also water based.  ( apparently using oil based glue WOULD be a problem )

Thanks,

I don't se reason to paint the out if you want to use tolex

True.  I do need to do the inside and doing the outside as well is almost as easy and looks cleaner.  But to your point, my reasoning is if the tolex rips or my corners are not great, black will not show up as much.  I then was going to just paint the finger joints/corners but figured just paint the whole cab.

You can use paint on scratch if necessary, don't need to paint under the tolex, also consider that paint don't resist much to scratch so if a demage happens easily It will trepass tolex and the under paint

I've always used gel super glue on a small tear and black shoe polish (or a Sharpie).  I would probably be concerned about glue adhesion being an issue if there was paint on the cab exterior.  Just my $.02.  Might not be an issue. :dontknow:

I don't paint wood if I'm going to use contact cement on it.  If you do, let it dry a couple of days to be sure.  I'm also a fan of super glue/marker to fix dings.

Painting as a visual backstop sounded good to me at first, but then I thought that any ding sharp enough to cut through tolex has a decent chance of cutting into the wood as well.  ymmv
