here in far left leaning MI-guv; if I was to defend myself with a handgun and the assailant had a knife attempting to kill me, I would probably be charged with manslaughter IF.. I wasn't bleeding badly!

haven't verified it but in MI I believe a knife is listed as "a dangerous weapon"
