Couple of newbe questions (tone stack)

1. Why do the Marshalls have a cathode follower before the tone stack and fenders don't?
2. How does the cathode follower effect the tone of the amp?

Actually, the marshall preamp is a design taken from earlier fenders (5F6-a bassman with a different treble cap) The fender blackface design "throws away" alot of your signal, that's why there is a 2nd gain stage after the tonestack caled a tone recovery amp. It is almost impossible to overdrive a stock non-reverb blackface fender, a Deluxe is a good example. the earlier design used 2 gain stages and then a cathode follower before the tone stack, the cathode follower changes the impedance of the signal before the tone stack, Ergo, the tone stack passes a hotter signal to the Phase inverter. there is a distinct difference in the sounds of the two, The marshall/tweed stack has much more mids and a WHOLE lot more gain, the blackface fender has a "scooped" midrange and an overall "Cleaner" tone. What are you building/modding?

I apologize for not searching for the answer before asking it.
I'm modifying one channel on my Fender Twin (for a lead tone) and I was wonderding if using half of the Vibrato tube for a CF before the tone stack was a worth while mod. The more I want to do to this Fender the more I think I should just build an amp from a kit or scratch (like some of you guys do).

If you look patiently you'll find a thread on the borad about modifiing the TS of a Twin to a more Marshall like tone (changing mid pot to 25K, changin cap's etc... )
I don't remember how the thread was titeled, so you have to look for it, but I remember Bluesbear posted there, so you may start looking for posts by Bluesbear...

I think I started that thread. Blues Bear told me...Bass cap .022, mid cap .022, slope resistor 56K, and the mid pot to 25K. I tried it on my twin and it gave me a more hollow tone. I felt like I lost both low and high edge, so I changed it back to stock. Try it, see what you think!
