 TuInside Tube amps
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm reading Dan Torres's book Inside Tube Amps.

He writes and presents a table regarding amplification in his book that the gain can be increased in an amplifier stage by increasing the value of the plate and/or cathode resistor.

Maybe I have misunderstood, but according to my understanding the gain decreases if I increase the value of the cathode resistor. Which one is correct?

increasing cathode decreases gain.,,,that book is full of hype and bad information,,throw it out,, Kevin O'conner's TUT's are much better..

 Stage Gain
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 The formula for gain is:

(plate resistance) // (plate load) // (following grid resistance)
(1/transconductance) + (cathode resistance)

where // means "in parallel with"

By increasing the numerator, such as plate load, the gain increases.

By increasing the denominator, such as cathode resistor, the gain decreases.

I'm also in the process of reading Inside Tube Amps, and was confused by that as well. There is some interesting info in the book though, $34 from AES.

Thank you for your answers guys. I have not bought the book, it´s from library. Which one of the Kevin O´Connor´s Ultimate tone book do you recommend? I´m looking for a book that contains good basic information related to tube amplifiers and tube technology. Dan Torres´ book is written for musicians and the way he presents the things is not always so scientific.

The best book out there for this (if you can find a copy) is the 2nd edition of The audio cyclopedia by howard tremaine, it is thorough, easy to understand, and in a question and answer format. WWW.Aikenamps.com is also a wonderful resource for all things musical and tube, he has a listing of reccommended reading as well as some wonderful tech info-check it out-

The first TUT book is a good general starting place. The first 2 TUT books are about 1/2 tube and 1/2 solid state. The first book has a lot on channel switching. The 2nd has a lot on solid state amplifiers. The 3rd TUT book is an amplifier projects. He goes through designs for AC-30, plexi, bassman, etc. He tries to use common transformers (hammond). They all have a lot of good information. The first TUT is probably the best starting place.

The aiken site is a great resource along with the web in general.
