The 1 ohm resistor that gets placed on the cathode, can that be left there, or does it need to be removed?

The 1u resister to ground stays there . When you measure voltage across it millivolt's will = milliamps.

It can be left there. On Doug's layouts you'll see them on the board, integrated into the design.
