Title: Neve 1073 preamp clones
Post by: TubeGeek on December 11, 2008, 10:35:53 pm
I am building an 8RU microphone preamp for my recording setup.  I just finished the Neve 1073 clones...

Next two will be Millenia preamp clones.

WoW..Beautiful work... :o
Looks as though it would be a labour of love.
A friend of mine owns a studio and knows I mess around building valve stuff, asked me if I could build him some mike preamps but I couldn't find schematics. Did you do the layouts yourself? Where did you find the parts for such exotic builds?

All I have done on these is populate the boards and solder!

These mic pre's come from a company called seventh circle audio.  They sell preamp kits.  It's an affordable way to get high quality preamps at reasonable costs.  I ordered the chassis and power supply that will power up to eight channels.

I also built other preamps several years ago from Hamptone.com.  I sold the tube pre but kept the jfet preamp for myself.

I have completed four channels of preamps so far, the millenia clones are now completed.  I am waiting for two voltage regulators from seventh circle audio and then all four channels are ready to be powered on and tested.

Last year I built some mic pres from JLM audio in Australia, the BA4 Baby Animals. They turned out nice.
He has a 1073 like kit, the 1290 that I've been thinking about, especially since the exchange rate is better
now than it was last year at this time.

Here's a link for the kit that I built.                 http://www.jlmaudio.com/Baby_Animal_Mic_Pre.htm

Here's one for the 1073/1290 kit.                   http://www.jlmaudio.com/JLMMicro1290.htm

I've been drooling over the Seventh Circle pres as well.

Wow... I'm duly impressed!

(How do you pronounce 'Neve' anyway?)

Nice! I didn't know anything of JLM until now.  There is a lot of info on the website, thanks for the link.

I have had an LA2A on my to do list for a while now, it looks like they make one of those too.  I'd also like to build more tube mics someday and there is  a schematic of a Neumann CMV551...sweet.

Neve is pronounced Neeeev.

Here are more mic pre's I built 5 years ago that I really like, they are Hamptone's.  One is Jfet and the other is tube.

I have a page on my website that has more pics of the build process of the 7th Circle stuff, if you're interested...http://www.glacieramps.com/Seventh_Circle_Preamps.html
