Title: Anyone know about Filmosound or any other movie projector amps?
Post by: BadAssBluesDude on December 23, 2008, 07:52:20 am
By accident on Ebay I came across a few listings of Filmosound tube movie projector amps. They seem to be built like a tank, 5-10 watts, etc. They seem to be selling for fairly cheap. Anyone know anything about these, are they worthy of trying to mod into a guitar amp. I recently read Vintage Guitar magazine's article about building a great tube amp for under $200 and these seem like an excellent candidate for a rejuvenation project.

Any tips, hints, suggestions, advice, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
TC

Filmosound amps were produced by Bell & Howell.

They are excellent platforms for mods and rebuilds. Small amps used 6V6's (some Canuck models were fitted with 6BQ5's for unknown reasons), large ones with 6L6's. Iron was really good.

Here's a pdf copy of a number of Filmo manuals:

(Caution: 220 pages long)

Their speaker units are also very valuable: they used top notch Utah and Jensen Alnico drivers with funky jack connectors (not a problem) and nice painted baskets/magnet covers.
