The customers spacific request is that he is wanted something 12 to 15 watts that was fairly quick to break up. I immediatly thought about a 5E3---even though I've never played over one he gave me free rain to build what ever I think is best. Even though I re-arranged the board layout somewhat the original circuit is mostly intact in channel 1 with standard 5E3 tone control and channel 2 with no tone control but three selections on cathode resistors and bypass caps called the tweed plus channel. It's entirely possible when I get it built some of the resistor/cap values may change on the tweed channel to best performance. I will post the changes, if any when

I believe the tone control will still affect channel 2. Using another isolation resistor will minimize that effect.

Phyco was talking about the mixing of channels was a good thing but I think he was mostly talking about a standard 5E3 setup. With my moded tweed + channel the effects could be ugley especially with more treble on top of the bright setting. The only CC resistors I have is 200K, reckon I can get by with that?

Forgive me if this really is old, but I am interested in the results of this amp build. Was this 5E3 variant successful?

Yes! I played it a week or two before my customer picked it up. It was suprisingly loud and clean considering the preamp and plate voltage but it did break up but you had to push it pretty loud. It had great tone and response. Randy Miller uses it in his studio in Georgia. Plate

Cool, thank you. That helps me choose my next project. I'm still undecided between 5E3, the so-called Hoffman PR layout or something entirely different.

Now that I'm gathering pieces and parts for my 5E3, I realise that I want to make this a head, rather than a combo. Can anyone recommend a good chassis? I found this, which looks like it'll do what I need (and more):
