Perhaps this one with an EF86 in V2 might be a good tone?

However, I built a Bassman Blues Jr. out of a Bogen DB-110 that is similar to this but with 6V6 power tubes. It sounds fantastic to me. This uses a Baxandall tone stack to accent the mids.

Compare this with the Matchless Lightning. Some similar topology but note differences in component values.  Also compare with Vox AC15 schematic. The "lightning strikes twice" schematic is easily editable.

You can try this with James tone stack or use typical Marshall tone stack.

Thanks a lot for this!

I like the switch on V1. In fact I have an unused On-Off-On SPST in my Club Deluxe based amp so this would be a good use for it.

Some changes I would recommend to prospective builders of this amp:

1. Change the plate resistor for V1 to 100k. This lowers the gain slightly (there is still enough) but drastically improves in retaining high end when turning down the guitar volume.

2. I would increase the 150k load resistor before the PI input to around 270k - 330k for slightly more drive to the PI.

3. For more overdrive capabilities I recommend to add a boost or treble shift switch to the tone stack. I used a 1MA push-pull DPDT pot for the treble control to add a 500pf cap in parallel to the 50pf treble cap.

4. I recommend to use an 820R bias resistor in the phase inverter cathode instead of the 1.2k.

5. Instead of the cut control with a 0.1uf cap I used a cut control with a 0.0047uf cap (actually it is now a 0.0033uf) and a LarMar PPIMV. This gave my amp a lot of versatility.
