Title: OT - need to ID tool
Post by: jrmintz on March 24, 2009, 05:02:11 pm
Hi All,

Attached is a picture of the mini jack on a pair of Fostex T20 headphones. I had to fix a pair the other day, and I couldn't figure out how to get this nut off. It has two grooves, one on each side. I tried needle nose pliers and it was clear I'd ruin the nut. What tool do you use for this kind of nut?

Thanks,

Seth

You need a pin spanner.  You can likely get the right size for that one at your local bicycle shop, though it might be too small.  You might also try McMaster-Carr, of course.

I usually make a tool for a job like that. I never throw anything away, so I have all kinds things i can make usefull.  I would make a tool for that nut using a piece of metal flat stock the thickness of the slots on that nut. Using my bench grinder ,  dremel grinder, and a file, notch out two ears to fit the nut. Use a pair of plyers to turn the make shift tool and your home free.  Good luck  Punky 8)
