One of my best friends passed away from brain cancer last summer. He collected and played (very well) guitars and as his motor skills diminished from the disease he just bought more and more instruments just to have them. He knew he was dying and they made him happy.
Last night at my gig my late friend Dave's brother Pete came into the club and handed me an instrument case, saying "Dave wanted you to have this". Inside was a late '40's Gibson electric ukulele. I did some research today and found that there were only something like 88 of these made and they are listed in an antique Gibson price book at $8,000 for excellent condition (which this is). I'll never sell this instrument. Needless to say I was a bit floored.
Thanks, Dave!
R.I.P.
Note: the uke pictured here is not mine. Mine's in better condition.
Edit: It was $4,500 - not $8,000.
