Title: grill cloth baffle question
Post by: prs_matt on August 18, 2009, 10:54:30 pm
Do I need to have a frame around the edge of the baffle to raise the grille cloth off of the face of the baffle? I have done it on two cabinets so far but am considering not on my current cab. Thoughts?

nope.  Only reason I have ever done it was for a front mount speaker.

No, but if you don't already, paint the wood flat black before mounting the grill cloth. Much better finished look.

some worry about the cloth buzzing on the baffle if you don't raise it up but I have only seen this on one amp that used a fairly heavy cloth type of grill cloth.

Cool! Thanks guys. I painted the baffle flat black and am using standard Fender silver grille cloth. I'll post pics soon.

Real Fender style grill cloth is actually heat shrink material. If you heat it up, it'll tighten to where it can't rattle. Use a large heat source, like a space heater. A hair dryer will shrink it unevenly.

Bob I get nervous evey time I do that but so far ever application has turned out pretty tight and squared up. I have used a hair dryer on one to tighten it up and get a wrinkel out.

Wow! I have used the Fender stuff on three cabs now and have spent a lot of energy getting tight, straight lines and all along I could have been heat-shrinking it...? I think my grilles just got a little easier.

I used a heat gun very carefully on my BFTR and all was looking good till the damn gun spat sparks from I don't know what and burnt a couple of small holes in the cloth! Then I found out that the best tool to use is a single bar heater as it spreads the heat out evenly and no flames. Oh well, buy some more grill cloth in from the States and do it again......
