With tolex, I have had total sucess with heavy duty wallpaper paste on several combo's and cabinets I have made (after sealing the wood).
With tolex type, backed vinyl, purchased from a fabric store, I had the same success.
I have also successfully used a diluted elmers glue.
If there was no backing material for the glue to soak into, such as (straight pleather), I would try the 3m spray contact type product.
Dont breath it.

3m super 77 for good adhesive

3m super 90 for never-get-it-off adhesive
