Title: CAPACITANCE METER
Post by: 69SG on September 08, 2009, 01:23:08 pm
Anyone have a suggestion for a meter that won't break the bank.
I have a pile of caps that I need to identify.
Thanks

I use an old Eico 950b Comparator.  Got it cheap on ebay with manual.  Don't remeber maybe $15 - $55???  Pretty cool if you're into vintage equipment.

New digital stuff is quicker and easier to use.  The old stuff makes you slow down, pay attention, set the right range, and read the corect scale on the dial.  Makes you pay attention.  Maybe that's a good thing.

It also tests the cap @ full voltage, up to 500 volts.

I use a sound level meter.  Charge up the cap, stick it on my tongue see how loud I scream.  There is a point (with the really big caps) where all the muscles just tighten up and I can't say a word.  So my meter is useful only up to a certain point.  Trick I learned in the army, mind you, we used to use it on different set of body parts.

That AES meter looks pretty interesting.  Measuring down to 0.1pF at 5% tolerance - thats pretty cool.  For $40 I am in.  Doesn't look as much fun though.

I like this one from tubes and more.
I've been looking at that one for about a week.
That seems like a better option than hooking up a charged cap
to my BIG H^IRY B^LLS and reading a DB meter

Awesome, I just ordered mine.  I am a real sucker for test gear.  Actually that is the sole reason  I build sloppy guitar amps, so I can buy more gear to test them with.
