Title: What kind of speakers do you like in your Twin Reverb?
Post by: loogie on September 17, 2009, 07:38:54 am
Do you prefer one kind for SF and another for BF?  I have a couple of SF Twins.  One I'll leave stock the other I'll get as close to BF as I can.

I love big bad Alnico drivers such as the JBL K120 or the Altec 417.

Is there anything currently in production that you might recommend?

Weber's versions of the classic JBL's are really excellent; some Eminence give excellent results (try a Swamp Thang & a Tonker or a pair of Lynch V12).

Yeah, I was gonna say the same, his california 12 sounds pretty darn good. Here's they're blurb about it:

For BF and SF Twins, replaces JBL D120F
12", 40oz AlNiCo magnet boosted with ceramic, 60 watt, 2" voice coil, curved cone.
Loud, smooth, uncolored, compressed at higher volumes. Available with paper, aluminum, or the large H screen dome for more warmth. Available with the standard curved lead guitar cone or the straight, cloth edge bass cone.

Regards,

Dyna

I put a pair of Eminence Red Coat Tonkers in mine.....Big, Loud, Cleans....not too flabby on the bottom which is crucial for me anyway.

I've had stock 12" Utahs, EVM 12Ls, Peavey Scorpions, Peavey Black Widows,  and Celestion G12-80's with it. The Tonkers are my favorite of those in that amp. I use the Twin for Cleans...Jangling Electric 12, Surf or Country Twang with Strat/Tele or Clean Rythym with HB equipped guitars. The EV's were probably the loudest of the bunch (and also the heaviest to lug). The Utahs and Scorpions were probably the quietest. The Tonkers are loud but also have a more "speaker driven" tone as opposed to the EV's which seem to have less tone coloring by the speaker.

I haven't tried Alnico on a Twin...I (personally) generally prefer Ceramic tone in most amps.

The classic clean sound would be JBL D 120s.
EVM12Ls are even cleaner.
For blackface, Jensen C12Ns or Eminence Red, White and Blues.

Of course it depends on what you're looking for, but a Weber 12A150 matched with a 12F150-T would be a mighty fine combination IMHO.  My recent Super Reverb build has two 10A125s and two 10F150-Ts and the owner LOVES it.  They're plenty clean with a tight low end, but the alnico adds a little bit of warmth and very smooth breakup.  The 10F150-T is perfect for a Princeton Reverb if that helps.

If you're after ultra-clean, the Weber California would be the ticket but it's not in Blackface territory to my ears.  Too clean and "uncolored".  (I do have a 12" California - in a box somewhere around here... )
