Title: Power wah fuzz problem
Post by: Joe6v6 on November 19, 2009, 01:03:33 pm
I have an old (late 70's ?) Morley - Tel Ray electronics Power Wah Fuzz that has issues. The Wah alone works fine & has a very nice tone. The fuzz byitself dosnt work well, It works but cuts out & mutes for a second then comes back, if I turn the guitar vol way down it does not cut in & out.  The Wah and fuzz together seem to work ok but the fuzz is not as pronounced as it is by itself. I am attaching a link to the schematic and a picture of the insides, I am wondering if I shoud start by replacing the electrolitic caps in the power section, I dont want to just throw parts at it but I know these caps go bad in time, everything seems original except one of the pots.  Thanks for any help  -  JOE

I don't know if you ever did anything with this pedal but...

I'd replace all the e-lytics on general principle, but especially the 1uF ones. A couple are used as coupling caps and another is a bypass cap, and if any of these are leaking they'll throw off transistor bias and could result in horrible clipping like you're describing. I also wonder about the trimpot, which I don't really see on the schematic. I'd bet it's a bias trimmer for one of the transistors. I know from mucking the bias on one of my Fulltone fuzzes that you can change the character of the fuzz a lot with that (in good and bad ways).

Thanks for the reply Blue, I havent worked on it yet but I am going to start by replacing all the electros & go from there. I think the trim pot is the one that says wah output ( 400k ) on the schematic.    ..   Joe

I had assumed the fuzz intensity and wah output were the controls on the side, and of course the tone control is the wah pedal itself.
