Title: Speaker recone recomendations

My 15" JBL D-130F for my AB165 finally died at age 43  :sad: I need to find someone to resurrect it but Weber isn't doing recones now and my local guy retired to the desert last year.
So are there any recommendations?

I believe these guys to be reputable -- The Speaker Doctor (http://www.speakerdoctor.com/index.html). I think they do more Hi-Fi stuff, but can do MI stuff as well.

If the magnet doesn't need recharging you can DIY using a third party kit from Joel Kennedy (http://stores.ebay.com/Kennedy-Audio-Productions) @ $124 +  shims - you can use 35mm film stock, no kidding - and shipping, or Sound Speaker Repair (http://www.soundspeakerrepair.com/speaker-parts-cp/JBL-D130F-8-Kit/KIT-JBL/JBL+Kits/) @ 150 + shipping.

I've used a couple of Kennedy recone kits (but not his D130 version) and they were excellent, the SSR kit is my standard when it comes to recone D130's.

OTOH you could send your D130 to a qualified reconer; for instance Orange County Speaker (http://www.speakerrepair.com/), a pro recone will cost $264 + two way shipping if you choose stock JBL parts (not recommended, as the kit is K- or E- style with a heavy cone) or $145 + shipping using an OK third party kit - OK because they use relatively heavy cones, Waldom style, not JBL-light ones like SSR does.

I saw the date of your post. Yesterday, July 3, 2012, Weber said they would be happy to recone a D130.

Great to know!   There for a while when Ted Weber was ill and subsequently passed away, the company seemed to cut back on some services.

The head reconer at Weber left a while ago, and reconing services were stopped for a few weeks.

Ok that makes sense with Weber's services. I inquired during that time, and Weber's rep said that it was indefinite whether they would reopen recone services for anything but Weber products at that time.

I ended up ordering a kit from Sound Speaker Repair, I haven't yet installed it.  In the meantime I found an old fairly heavy 15" Alnico Heppner speaker in a Hammond Organ that I put in the Bassman cabinet and it sounds really good.
