Title: Can anyone build me one of those 'diy tube tester' things from hoffman?
Post by: soberswede on April 16, 2010, 09:54:34 am
Hi, I mailed Doug earlier and asked if he could build me one of those diy tube tester kits he sells
unfortunately he didn't have the time, but he suggested that someone on the forum might be up for it!

I'm technologically illogical so i'm going to have a tough time assembling one of those myself

Do you mean the "bias checker" kit that he sells?

http://www.el34world.com/charts/BiasChecker2.htm

If so, I'd encourage you to make it. It's really very simple and would be a useful intro to soldering if you've never done it before. There's nothing quite like building your own tools.

All that said, I'd be happy to help.

Ah yeah, sorry, I meant the bias checker :-)

Yeah it seems like a good first project, but I don't have the dough to put down on soldering equipment right now
I basically just need to re-bias some KT66s in my amp, i've borrowed a multimeter so I figure all I need is a couple of those bias checkers?

One of these days though, when I have the cash to put down on some basic equipment and solder i'm going to build a byoc pedal to learn alittle (i figure it's better to start out with 9vdc rather than 400+v  :angel), but until then it would be really nice if one of you who already have experience could build a one of those for me

It'd help me alot :)

Several years ago, I bout a pair of bias leads on fleaBay.  I think they were like $30.00 and the leads are like <1.5 ft long.  I felt somewhat taken so be careful.  If you're in the Austin area, I'll sell em to you for the cheaps.

Thanks for the offer! But Sweden isn't very close to Austin :-)

Stupid of me though, I hadn't even thought of checking eBay!
I just checked and there are bargain-priced bias-testers (with built-in displays)

Thanks for the ebay tip!
