Title: 1965 Super Reverb on the bench - interesting caps and a speaker question
Post by: LooseChange on April 18, 2010, 07:00:31 pm
Nice 1965 Super Reverb on the bench.
This amp sat for 15 years. I did a cap job and a lot of cleaning. It's amazing how those blue molded tubular coupling caps are always good... I can't remember the last time I had to replace a leaky one.
Check out the filter caps... Ever seen these gold GE's??

Out of the four speakers only one is still original.
I'm looking for a decent replacement that is similar to the P10R. Amp owner does not want to spend the $300.00+ for a new quad of P10R's... How about a quad of C10R's?

Thanks for the advise!

Yes C10R or the larger-magnet C10Q for a few more $$.

Depending on the tone he's after, how about a pair of Weber Signature Alnico 10S and another pair of 10F150-T speakers?

10A125 and 10F150-T sounded great in an S.R. clone.  Signature series saves some $$$.  May not be the right direction though.

Just a thought,

Chip

I've seen those caps before. Nothing special; they're basically the same as the Mallory's shown, except by a different manufacturer.

I guess Fender ran out of the lower-valued Mallory caps for a while, or got a cheaper deal on a truckload of G.E.'s.

Other speakers to consider:  Jensen Mod 10-50 (50W 1.25" VC, seamed ribbed cone) @ $40ish+ship.  Warehousespeakers.com Veteran 10 @$40+ship.

I have seen those gold GE caps in one other amp. They must have looked swell when new.

Fender briefly used them in '65. I've seen 3 or 4 amps fitted with them.

What are the other 3 speakers? Are they bad enough to need replacing?
