Title: Just ordered two Eminence Red Fangs for my '66 Bassman.
Post by: jerryjg on May 26, 2010, 04:45:18 am
Good idea or not? Bear in mind I can always use them elsewhere, and I  got them at less than the old price- ( well, havent got them yet).
Of course, my Bassman is 40 watts, and  with the two Eminence Alnico Red Fang speakers rated at 30 watts each,  the power handling will be 60 watts . I like to run the Bassman at full throttle, so thats the main factor to consider. Will I be safe?, I mean ..I know double the speaker wattage vs. amp wattage is always recommended.

EDIT-
Ahh, yes. The place I ordered it from had it rated 30 watts, but those are thee old specs. Eminence has since revised the rating on the speaks to 50 watts, so I think Im good. The only real issue is if it will compress to much to cut through a mix  being pushed with 40 watts and the two 6l6's in the Bassman ?
From the clips, the 'Fang has great cleans, sounds good overdriven, but I dont think it sounds great with heavy hi gain, but it should sound excellent with my Bassman cranked  at home .

Measured specs are exactly the same between 2003 and 2006 versions, so any change made would be minimal, such as using a higher temp voice coil former/glue. IMO Eminence raised the price and the power handling spec without changing anything else...

I use a pair of 16-ohm 2003's with a 45W+ EL34 PP wreckish amp and they haven't blown or suffered after five years of abuse, so you should be OK with a Basman, provided you don't add layer after layer of fuzz/disto/overdrive effects and don't set everything on 12.

BTW, Red Fangs sounds really nice in tweedish amps - think big bad Celestion Blue/Gold. OK, they aren't canonical, but who really cares?

(Now, Mr. Eminence, what about a *removable* bell cover on the magnet?)

Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I primarily use the Bassman  head  sans pedal straight into the cabinet, but also may use my original Clark Gainster to kick it into tweed/JTM  territory. I do like to play loud though.
