Title: Dio backed by Deep Purple?!?!?
Post by: Ritchie200 on August 16, 2010, 02:06:30 am
Perusing through u-toob and found several live shows (2000-2006) with Dio singing Dio and Purple stuff with Deep Purple backing him.  Also a show with full orchestra with Gillan AND Dio singing Smoke!  Lots of mutual respect to allow that to happen!  Some great pipes on that stage!

I think it's cool how they're able to hide their Fender Champs behind all their FX racks

Hah!  You are not going to get me to bite on that!  As far as I am concerned, DP became something COMPLETELY different when Tommy Bolin and CERTAINLY when Steve Morse (yawn, pinch harmonic, yawn) joined the band.  Besides, all I saw were Morse's always present back line of 5150 buzzmonsters and his usual distorted mush.  Heck, even a Champ would have been a step up - not much, but a little!  Interesting to note that Steve is now Deep Purple's longest resident guitarist (15 years) - that's just not right!  It's like the Twilight Zone - AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I saw Dio and Deep Purple in 02' in Moline, Illinois... Great show!  The Scorpions were Co-Headlining and their singer Klaus Meine kept referring to Moline, as Milan..... Moline isn't a bad place by any means, but how clearly not Milan......at all.

Great show!  Dio did a bunch of Rainbow too. Too bad he passed, I'd see him again in a heartbeat.

Frightening eh? Like Phil Collen in Def Leppard, or Ronnie Wood in the Stones.

I did get to see Rainbow back in '94 in London, which was cool. And Dio/Scorpions/DP in '02 at Tinley Park just south of Chicago. That was very cool indeed. I think that was before Jon Lord left, but don't quote me on that...I was wasted about half way through the Scorpions.

THat reminds me of the story Satch tells about getting the call to join Purple after Ritchie left.  He turned it down taking the advice Vai had given him years ago about being a gun for hire.  Then he got thinking about how DP was one of his all time fav bands, about how cool would it be to have such a legendary bass/drum/keyboard combination back HIM!  He called his manager back in a panic asking if he had given his answer back yet - he had not, saying he was waiting for him to come to his senses.  The guys from DP even insisted that he play Satch Boogie - how cool is that!  He said they were the most talented, easiest band he has ever played with.  How cool would that be?!?!?  Yeah, I've got this little ditty I wrote that DP is playing backup on!

That is a cool story. What do you think of Satriani's recent efforts with Chickenfoot?

I saw them play last year and I was quite impressed. He said he'd always wanted a good band...not just him and a backing band...the "whole thing", and Chickenfoot is the first time he's felt he was in a decent band of his own. I'm sure the the DP experience, while amazing, didn't quite count as "your own band".

To tell you the truth, I have not heard any Chickenfoot.  I think the last Joe I listened to was a G3 DVD with Vai and Malmsteen.  Interesting video in that Malmsteen played his butt off and was clearly the highlight of the show - IMHO.  I'll have to u-toob up some Chickenfoot to see what its all about.

I got to see one of those G3 shows in Chicago (same week as The Eagles), and Malmsteen was OK I suppose. I'd never seen him live before and to be honest I thought his stage show was hilarious. I'm not sure he meant it to be though. He did lots of pouting and sweating in his doesnt'-fit-anymore leather gear.

It's great to hear a Marshall cranked, but he was ear-splittingly loud, and his tone was like an ice-pick in the side of the head. Technically he's great but I'm just not into his music :dontknow:

I was definitely there to see Satriani and Vai

Hah hah!  Reminds me of seeing Joe Lynn turner with his ample gut hanging out from UNDER his untucked shirt and OVER his ultra tight leather pants - what a riot!  I'm sure if he turned around I would have to say NO to crack!  I saw Malmsteen back in the late 80's and I seem to remember a lot of guitar slinging over his shoulder ala Vai when he was with David Lee Roth.  And yes it was cranked, but I thought the tone was pretty smooth.  Being the Blackmore superfan that he was/is (who would want to do THAT?!?!?!), he would always play loud and try to be the bad boy.  I did notice the backline cabs were missing speakers and most, if not all, the heads had battery powered pilot lights.  His guitar smashing act was hilarious with these lightweight speakerless cabs and heads bouncing around like a bunch of kids foam blocks.  He tries hard to come across as a rocker-rebel.  Unfortunately he just comes across as a spoiled idiot.  I have a few albums, but they all tend to run together.  He does have some amazing ability.

Chickenfoot is probably the best Sammy Hagar I've heard since Montrose, as it seemed to me his solo days were hit-and-miss and his VH days weren't up to par.
