Hi,
New around here and I am a fellow builder and player. I would like to see the work people are the most proud of.

Okay, here's one. I built it for my son and I was just over at his house playing through it this afternoon. It's a Marshall plexi clone with a master volume, an Allen style raw control, and a Hoffman Hot Switch with pre and post controls.
I have others I like as well, particularly since I don't use anything over 20 watts, but I have a picture handy for this one.

10W, SE amp, through a KT77.
-
Tweed Overdrive Special with clean & overdrive channels. OD has triode into 5879. 5881's Probably about 17watts
Carolina Overdrive Special with clean & overdrive channels. OD has triode into 5879. 6L6's Probably about 23 watts. This is similar to the Tweed Overdrive but uses a Dumblish type tone stack.
Tweed OD Lite with reverb with clean and OD. OD has only a 5879. 6V6's Probably around 14 watts.
Tele's are hollow bodies with no "f" holes.
With respect, Tubenit
-
My Overdrive Rocket in suede is one of my best.
50 watts, two channel, footswitching channels and preamp boost.6L6 power tubes.NOS paper in oil coupling caps.
-
My two channel blues machine. Does a nice hard rock tone also.
-
And my two channel metal amp.
-
Here's my first build. i plan to do some further mods soon. Timbo
-
Maybe not the prettiest or the most controls I have on an amp but was one of the first designed entirely on my own. The Sheriff was my take on a single 12 combo lower powered JCM800 w/ 6V6s. It has an extra gain stage, switched presence, cathode or fixed bias, pentode/triode mode, send/return, variable line out @ 15 - 18 watts.
-
At the Moment itīs this beast which is played a lot on stage so it is heard by lots of people and therefore my "proudest built"
3 Channels, Clean (boostable to crunchy tones), Crunch (boostable to 80ies Metal), Lead, serial Loop, 2x KT66.

I was kind of proud of my Cherry front Komet 60 build. But alas, it was too loud for me.
-
My very first one (ca 2005) but...still....the one that I am the most proud of.
All octal (5691 pre and PI) 5F6A in a curley maple cab with Weber Alnico Blue Dog and Silver Bell.
GREAT sounding amp that takes pedals extremely well. But..a total bear to tote around to gigs!
Dave O.
-
OK, im in the right place!
-
Here is my fav amp so far...I've had plenty of offers but I won't let it go.
5E3 Deluxe
-
One more creative re-design of a Tweed Deluxe. Only 1 set of Hi/Lo inputs and the other two used for Treb & Bass w/ push/pull pots. V1 switched for series/parallel, tone stack can be bypassed w/ slight low end filtration to keep it from becoming muddy, Vol & PPI MV, w/ switchable Presence in old tone position.
-
Super Reverb clone/derivative. Hoffman-style bias vary tremolo. Standard Vibrato channel. Normal channel has Brown Vibroverb tone stack, reverb, tremolo, and numerous tweaks including guitar/harmonica switch instead of Bright switch. Two Weber 10A125 and two 10F150-T speakers. Mojo cab & chassis.
Visited the owner last week - he still loves it after playing it for a year. Hadn't turned it up past "6" yet though... so I plugged it into a Weber MiniMass and cranked it to 8.5. I love that power tube overdrive, but he's really happy with the clean tone.

Chip,
That's one of the best looking Fender clones I've seen! Chassis layout is just beautiful. Well done. I like your choice in speakers also.

I'll bite on this one because my proudest build was a struggle in both design and fine tuning. It started out dubbed as the 'Nirvana Project' last year that I built for a good friend/great guitar player and finished--if you can ever call a project finished--several months ago. Similar in topology to the *umble or TOS and runs either 2x6V6 or 5881s. Sporting a wormy maple cabinet. Too many knobs and weighs more than it should--but it does have a lot of tasty tonal options. And VVR. Ended up being a great amp to play but, oh the labor pains! Regards.

Wow! Nice hardwood cabinets guys!

Wow everyone's amps look killer!
Here's a couple of my builds a two channel dual eq beast and a 200 watt bass amp sportin Marshall Major clone iron from Heyboer.

Men, these amps are great!

Here's a couple.
A Princeton.....sort of. MV, Bright switch, Dwell, tweak mods.
-
A standard 5E3.
-
And a 6V6 stout with the hot-switch on the front.Boost and NFB switches on the rear. That head was way cool in the tone dept.
-
I love the fact that with this many people, there is almost nothing in common between these amps. There are a hundred ways to thread this needle and they all work.
Great work, one and all!!
Dave
-
These are all great to see. Dave's got a good point - there's a lot of individuality in all of these builds and that's really cool.
Madison - your amps are beautiful inside & out. I L-O-V-E that wood 5E3 cab :glasses9:
Cheers,
Chip
-
How about a CRAZY build?
Want tone out the wazzou?
-
Ah,what the heck!
Here's a set of twins that I'm proud of.
-
Now your talking - sweet! Phsyco, a couple of questions:
- how did you fasten the silver beading on the front baffle?
- how did you manufacture the chassis with the sloped face?
-
Orange preamp + Black Face Super Reverb from rev to P.I. and bias vary trem.
No faceplate yet on this pic.
-
Hey noodler, is that two amps in one cab in the top photo???
I love the style of those "twins". Very unique and cool.
Chip
-
Yeah it's two amps in one.One side with EL34's and the other with 6L6's.Sounds pretty wicked.
-
Yeah it's two amps in one.One side with EL34's and the other with 6L6's.Sounds pretty wicked.
You definitely have the crazy build category wrapped up. Did you do a twin 2204 once?
-
Love the thread and the variety too! Very fun to see everybody's "hand" like in a poker game but much better since they're all hand-made pride & joy. I call these more than just great art, they're functional art. The best kind. You get to see, hear, feel, touch, play, and even smell and about the only sense you can't do is taste.
-
This is when I was in shape and working out, well before my back went out. I was training for the golden gloves....
-
Wasn't that a hundred years ago?
Manufacture chassis? How about a sheet of aluminum and a hand brake! And a drill.
Yeah i did a dual 2204.It's still hurting people's eardrums to this day.The silver beading is an automotive trim and it's inserted into a CNC channel cut into the baffle.
-
This is when I was in shape and working out, well before my back went out. I was training for the golden gloves....
Oh, I get it. All amp'd up. Give me the juice!
-
>>Madison - your amps are beautiful inside & out. I L-O-V-E that wood 5E3 cab
Thanks Chip.
Same back at ya.
It wouldn't have been possible this without THIS forum.
Great folks here.
Amazing builds.
Give me lots of hope to see how many great craftsmen there still are.
Peace.
-
I was happy the way the 5E3 variation head came out except I was still haveing problems with tweed glue bleed through.

I was happy the way the 5E3 variation head came out except I was still haveing problems with tweed glue bleed through.
Even though you've pointed it out, and the pictures are good, I can't see it myself.
If I ever get around to building my own 5E3 the cab will look much like yours. I think it's excellent.
-
Thanks! I appreciate that! Even though it is a head, I wanted to capture some the the original tweed and grillcloth combo look with still yet a little bit of modern toutch/layout to boot. Plate
-
I have no business posting after some of these amazing amps, but here I go anyhow. Two 5E3's, one with a matching stand-alone verb.

This is why i like this place you guys do great work. Bill

Well, I figured out the electronic part long before I got the cabinet and faceplate part. Some of my proudest builds are pretty sad looking. I'll get some shots together later... I'll be brave!

-
hello all. this is my best and favorite gig amp. thanks to tubenit for the "blues amp" circuit.
Weber cab, chassis and Texas 15. Big sound from two 6v6 tubes. This forum is the
best tool on my bench. Thanks to all ! Oldgitar335
-
Well, I figured out the electronic part long before I got the cabinet and faceplate part. Some of my proudest builds are pretty sad looking.
I'm with you there.... I focus on the function and tone, and worry little about cosmetics... My favorites will look pretty sad when compared to many of these.
The top amp is a 5E3 variant which was the first amp I built for a customer. I built it as a plain-Jane looking sleeper. The guy walks into a gig with a plain little red box with 3 knobs. Turn it on and it wails! I'm proud of that one as someone bought it...
The lower amp is my 18 Watt Stout variant. It's by far the best amp when overdriven that I have ever owned. I need to redo the faceplate to make her more respectable, but other than that it's the most played amp that I have. I just built the head, some factory in the UK built the 4x12 cabinet.

our latest... a matchless spin-off - just the pentode channel; built for a friend who wanted it in a rack-mount chassis - we just finished it up this evening. buttery was drooling whilst playing it... :lipsrsealed: we got lucky and managed between both of our stashes to tube it up with all NOS sylvania tubes. the 4 6BQ5s are black barrel plate. tube compliment is 1-ef86, 1-12ax7, 4-6bq5, and 2-5u4gb. we used the PT and OT out of a wurlitzer organ amp, the choke is a NOS stancor.

Proudest backbreaking amp to date - my surfin' monstrosity - a hybridised 5F6A/JTM45/bluesbreaker with a 6G9B trem with AC coupled CF and peculiar reverb (that features 4 types of reverb control). I've never been able to dime this amp, it shakes the windows too much. As with most of my amps to-date, a lot of the stuff I scratch-built myself incl chassis and boards. The trannies were hand made by a good friend of mine
Don't look at all the knobs - it'll just confuse ya

Very very cool stuff you have done! I like your builds alot.

I like your slide show LC. I see you have also found larger eyelets come in quite handy

Thanks. Those eyelets are normal size, the wire is smaller.

Hey guys, I would love to see what you have done since this thread! This should be a sticky!
I was just looking for some gut shots so I could get my lead dress right and stumbled on this thread. you guys are SO CREATIVE! I am inspired. I think when I get this one done I'm going to build another one just so I can do something different. Kudos to all!

Wow guys! :worthy1:
-
Finished this one in the beginning of last year. A scratch build called Wildcat some may remember? You have a choice of "Vintage", "Marshall", or "Fender" multi-stage gain structure on a 3-way switch, TMB tonestack or switched/bypassed "Tweed" voicing, with power scaling VVR volume control into EL34/KT77/6L6.

You all are an insanely talented group of individuals! The woodworking, metalwork, clean wiring, inventive circuits and bitchin' layouts, etc., this thread has it ALL. Keep 'em coming!
-
Craig: Is that radio grill cloth on your amps? Just wondering how easy (or wasn't) to secure it in place. The stuff I've seen is more "cloth" than the woven plastic of normal guitar amp grill cloth.
-
And Craig, where on Earth did you get those cable 'anchors' for the power cord? Those are really simple looking, and I can't seem to find them anywhere!
-
I like very much the circuit of this amp where the preamp is based on both
12AX7s and EF86. The power amp is 2xEL84 used in VOX AC15 Matchless Lightning.
A more powerful version can be done by adding two power tubes. The amp is
then close to VOX AC30/Matchless DC30.

My first amp build and first cab build back in 2001 will always be special to me--even though I later put the brass corners on to cover up my faulty corners on my first tolex job.
-
Craig: Is that radio grill cloth on your amps? Just wondering how easy (or wasn't) to secure it in place. The stuff I've seen is more "cloth" than the woven plastic of normal guitar amp grill cloth.
No, that stuff is plastic. $1.29 for enough to do both cabinets at the local electronics place. They had a whole bunch of different styles of radio cloth, so I picked up some of that too since it was cheap. I'm not sure exactly what I'll use it for, but have you ever seen what AES gets for that stuff? I felt compelled to buy it
-
And Craig, where on Earth did you get those cable 'anchors' for the power cord? Those are really simple looking, and I can't seem to find them anywhere!
I think those came off an old Peavey SS amp someone gave me for parts. Probably the most useful parts I got from that one!
-
Here's my ODS build from the old Hybrid Rev A schematic. The photo does not do justice to the wood color--actually a rich brown walnut (1/8th" veneer on poplar plywood except the figured piece which is solid.)
And my most recent, built from AX84 schematics--blues preamp and 5W SE power amp. It also has the AX84 October studio effects loop partially wired up back in the back. Not the most beautiful cosmetically, but I love the sound of the 7199 and 12AU7. Due to limited space I decided on point to point rather than the usual turret board layout, but I hate terminal strips so I made up some mini turret strips and boards to suit the layout I wanted.

Finished a new project tonight. This is a Princeton Reverb circuit in an African mahogany cabinet. Speaker is a Weber 12F125A.
I wish I could keep this one. It is a gift from a wife to her husband for their 35th wedding anniversary. Nice gift eh!?

5E3 Deluxe
Wow -- that is a beautiful color on that cab. What stain and finish is that if I may ask? thx.

It's a combination of two stains to get the red. I don't recall the exact mix that was used. Then it has a satin poly coating too.

Nice work!

my latest two builds. The one on the left is based on a one channel Deluxe 6G3 and has an 8" alnico (external speaker out get used a lot!), the trapezoidal one on the right is based on a Deluxe 5E3 and has a 10" alnico. Both have upper and lower chassis designs due to the small cabinets.
The 6G3 uses 7C5's and a 7F7 instead of 6V6s and a 12AX7 PI. the 7C5 is a loctal 6V6, and the 7F7 is a loctal 6SL7. I'm very pleased with these, especially the 7C5s.

Not all of them but a few..........and like Grandma says"I don't have a favorite.....I love all my kids the same" :happy2:

Can you describe the dumblish channel somewhat, please? Like a Vox clean with dumblish OD?
Or are you saying Vox & then dumblish clean with dumblish OD?
I'm really curious.
Did the amp covering come from Gary's Upholestry?

This is the one I'm the proudest of. I have been building amps (+27 and counting) and this one stands out. It's the one I gig with, my own 1987 replica.

So many great looking amplifiers. God bless America; land of the free, home of the brave, and birthplace of tube amp art.
A man with a hobby is a man with a purpose. laying on a couch watching Archy Bunker, the Fonz and Richie Cunningham is not a hobby.
Laying on a beach in Cancun may be a hobby, but I prefer the safety and tranquility of my workshop and my tool shed. I never contracted Montezuma's Revenge from wiring the heaters on a 1987 Plexi box.
:icon_biggrin:
-
I am truely envious of the woodworking skills that you fellows have. I have no such skills. I can work metal, but I can't cut a straight line on a piece of wood. So, I look for projects that already have the wood intact. This is one that I did a while back:
It was not my first scratch-built, but it was my first push-pull that I 'borrowed' ideas from Gibson, Fender, and a couple other old amps. The guys here coached me on the rough spots. Everything turned out really well, so as my wife says about all men (we are actually all boys), I "conquered it and put it in the pile with the other toys". Then on to more, that have need to be conquered.
I do have two more similar (minus speaker cabs), that are the same model of Setchell-Carlson. One is very complete, with a nice cabinet. I have never powered it up, as I don't have a schematic and did not want to do so, until I knew more about it. Good fortune led me to another of the same model, minus the cab, and highly hacked. It had a diagram of the OT, rolled up in the chassis amongst the components. So now, I have the impedance of each OT tap that I can use to connect a speaker cab to the good amp. I suppose that I could have pulled the power tubes and brought it up on the limiter.
Anyway, I plan to use the hacked one for some type of effects build. The Dorf Vibrato is one thought, as it only has five tubes. Or, maybe a Tremolo and/or Reverb. Is there such a thing as a tube version of an octave doubler/shifter? If that is the proper name for it.
I thought to put it on a wooden platform with the same for end caps. It would clean up nice. It still has the original iron that I can use.

I migth be able to scan and post a schem on the dumble side. actually its a trainwreck type circuit but then i used the local feedback loop trick and brough one of tha values way low and I like the results. I had guys at the amp shows saying whats with all the sustain. It holds it for as long as you want
the vox side is almost dead on vox preamp but then into the 6v6 power with typical marshall 50 watt bias circuit and PI specs. I did do the 50k revers pot on the 470 ohm in PI.

didnt you have one that used that local feedback network?

bypass caps were 47uf and the third gain stage I think i brought it down to about 5.6k

This is my 1st and only home brew. Doesn't look as fancy as the others here but it sure is a gem to play. One day I'll make a cab for it.
-
Joe that amp looks great, like you said you just need a nice cab to put it in.
Got a gut shot pic to post? :undecided:

Oh oh, after seeing the awesome wiring dressing on this thread this will be truley humbling. The amp sound awesome though. Mod's were octal socket and conjunctive filter to reduce harsh highs. The EL84 is not used anymore. Only octal valves.
PS: I may re-order the ground connections on my ground terminal strip (bottom left on pic). They are not quite in the correct order of lowest power to highest power circuits right to left. Thanks for making me look at it. lol.
-
That's a very nice 1'st build Joe. :bravo1:
As you learn more they'll get better and better. Layout will help clean up leadress and stray wires. I'm not saying anything is wrong with your layout, just more than 1 way to skin a cat. I'm still working on it too.
I'm sure that most of the "awesome" builds you refer to were built by guys who had 10, 20, 30 or more builds/re-builds under their belt already.
Brad :icon_biggrin:
-
I'll second the motion, that's a very decent first build. Nothing to be ashamed of. If you build more, you'll get better at it, but it can definitely be irritating to make the wires just so.
-
Thanks guys. I promise to make it even better next time. The most fun is learning and getting better at it.
Here's a sound clip with a KT66. Scroll down to "Download This File" and enter the 4 letters they display, click "Download Now". Sorry it's a bit of a pain but it works..

I've been doing a lot of gut/rebuilds of old tube PA heads for the locals lately---no pics of these taken----- but here's a 50 watt Plexi-type build w/LarMar PPIMV i did last yr:
Used leftover Metro chassis, faceplates, turret board, and laydown PT--- Magnetic Components OT--- not as inventive as many of the other amps posted--- just another 50 watt Plexi clone----- but it looks nicer than the PA head gut/rebuilds i've done since----- recently finished a Sound City 120-to-Hiwatt gut/conversion---nice player but not as photogenic as this greenish Plexi.............................gldtp99
-
Nice! Where did you get the cab? I need to make or buy one of these after I get my current 18 watt Plexi wired up and debugged.
-
I got the head cab off ebay, it's a "second" (maybe because of a couple of small scuffs ?)-------it was made by Mojo Music Supply-- their Custom Shop------ dark greenish leather looking material with an upgraded type of handle.
I also have one of their standard black tolex Marshall-type smallbox 50/JTM 45 head cabs------i'm going to build a 6V6x4 Plexi with that one soon.

Joe,
As the others have said, that looks fine! You can spend hours cinching them up and bending them in nice 90 degree forms - and all that will do is guarantee it will hum itself off your bench due to lead dress! As long as its quiet, you are good to go! Ehh, lead dress can come later after you have blown some things up, shocked yourself a couple of times, and completely torn down and re-soldered an amp you tired everything to get working - but could not! As Willabe said, you will be surprised what you learn as you go. As you mentioned, the important thing is how it sounds when you plug in! Nice job.

Every single amp build posted here are works of art . Each has their own personal expression and signature.
I don't have but photo's of three builds I did , all the others I lost the photo's and are now sold so here is what I have .

This was my very first build . It was a kit I think STF electronics and was a basic 5F2A princeton that came with a hammond chassis an transformers . I don't have a photo of the inside and the back is off for the photo but it was like a hald cover from the top down to the chassis and had two cutouts like the old fender tweeds to allow heat out. Later on I got another chassis from the same place and a larger Hammond PT and a huge Allen amps SE OT and built the same basic amp but had 2 6V6's in parallel and added a output jack selector switch yet the cab was the same one. I made it into a head from the start. I sold it years ago .

This is a 77 fender music master bass amp chassis in a 71 music master bass amp cab . I got the amp dead so I sort of cramed a weber 5E3 eyelet board in there and added a rect socket and one 9 pin and changed things a bit over time . I added an adj/fixed bias and used the input and tone stack from 6G2 and used an Allen amps TP25 PT and allen amps TO25 OT . It all fit it has no tremlo and built the bias board you see on the far left next to the first filter cap.It has a weber sig12s alnico. I later added a spst toggle as can be seen in the photo of the amps face to switch out the second gain bypass cap and add in the 6G2 NFB loop or flipped the other way it's back to the bypass cap and no NFB loop.
here's the spdt switch I added for the NFB and bypass cap.

This is my SF Champ homebrew . Allen Amps narrow panel tweed chassis . weber tranny's the eyelet board came with the chassis and was perfect to build the circuit on. The cab ,well , I built that cab to build a few other amps so since I had it I fit the new chassis in what was once the side so I spliced in a section of mahogany ply I had left and mad a new cutout so that's why the speaker in not in the center but I liked it like that . I had a pot to add more resistance to the NFB seem on the bottom of the chassis right and it went to a fender dpdt slide switch that was already a cutout in the chassis next to the input jacks , I removed the pot and 3 green leads and installed a toggle where the pot was so the NFB is on or off. That hole is a prepunched extra 9 pin in case one wanted to build a P-P ss rect or what ever one wanted.

This is a cab I built back in 2005 . I had a SF 1973 champ at the time so I built this cab the same width as the fender music master bass amp cab only tall enough to fit 2 twelves . Since the champ chassis and MM bass amp chassis are the same exact size I first slide the SF champs chassis in it and ran the 12's . When I sold the champ I then slide the 77 chassis I showed in my first post into this cab and ran 2 tweves and had 6L6;s and a GZ-34 in that chassis then I decided to put it back in the 71 MM bass amp stock cab with the 6V6's and 5Y3 and one 12 . It was just too much amp for here. I did love the SF champ in there with 2 twelves it was a fun amp . I still have that cab sitting empty . maybe some day I will use it again. Maybe .

This is the first strat I ever built in 1985 . I got the wood from a hardwood place that is not gone and got the frets and other hardware from a guitar shop here that used to sell new parts and got the truss rod there to and built this with hand tools and a router and small bench top drill press. I built three more since then and still have this one and two others. One is a hondurous mahogany two peice body with clear finish and the other is light ash two piece body sunburst and the white one is alder two piece body . All have rosewood finger boards and jumbo bass frets and rock hard maple necks. All built the same way the hard way.

how 'bout a pic of the other two Cat-o-nine Strats? love that blanco uno!

Here ya go smackoj :
When I built the mahogany strat I first used the neck off a 1984 american standard strat I had then built my own neck then sold the american standard strat . This photo was taken about 1994 when I got the fender tweed blues deluxe amp you see behind the strats. I need to get some photo's of how they look now with a lot more wear.

You like the wang bar on the top side? I've always wondered how Jimi dealt with that (of course I've wondered about a lot of what Jimi did!). Very nice builds!
Jim
PS Note to Tubenit - this is what a REAL guitar looks like! :m8

Thanks Jim. Truth of the matter is the left hand tremlos on 2 of the strats I did were cheap since the guitar shop I got them from didn't sell many of them so they were half the price so I went with those. But after trying them I really like them because basically most of the force is on the low E side . Even the pick guard of the mahogany one is used but was cheap and in great shape . I have three different PU sets in each strat . The white one has used Ibanez strat Pu's that I got for free from a local guitar shop , he always had a bag of old parts for me when I came in but they are not far from stock strat pU's they are the same size and have the staggered poles . The sunburst one has Semour Duncans that I got new but cheap from the same place they are SSL-1 models and both the white and sunburst have gotoh vintage style tuners and trem's . The mahogany one has fender texas specials and fender trem and tuners but it was a trade, I replaced the shop owners power window motors and window regulators on his old ford shop van for the PU's and trem and tuners. All the three strats have wide necks at the nut 1 3/4" so I can get my big boney fingers in there and the necks are thick too . I still have an extra set of the Ibanez strat PU's just in case but they seem to last a long time.

I finally got a bottom for my AX84.com October build. For those of you who are not familiar, 20 watt, push pull, 6V6GT, tube recto, vintage/modern switch. Dark, Bright gain. I love the amp. By far the best sounding amp I've owned. The front and rear faceplates were hand made. The cab's are custom made by Sourmash. The 2x12 1936 bottom just arrived yesterday. Loaded with WGS Invaders. Sounds killer.
PS: I need to shave a little plexi off the bottom of the front face plate to center it better. Just too lazy. lol.
-
Back shot. Guts.
-
Here's my previously posted AX84.com High Octane Head inserted in my new Sourmash head (for the October. It's a perfect fit since both chassis are 16x2x8). I'm not sure I want to buy another head cab though. The High Octane (SE 10 watt, KT66) doesn't sound so good next to the October and I may need to beef it up. Not sure how. It just sounds thin and small in comparison.
-
Here's another favorite build on mine. It's an Overdrive Rocket.6v6's D-Style amp.
-
Here is my trainwreck express clone. I am a newby and this is my first build!! It is for personal use only!! Her name is "Caryn". She is fitted with a VVR, which reallly helps!! Current tube complement is 2x NOS Mullard ecc83 and 1x NOS Phillips miniwat ecc83 for v1. Power tubes are NOS Philips (Mullard) EL34 XF2 and NOS Seimens XF3. She is quiet quiet (except for hiss), even when fully dimed. Really chuffed. PT and OT are MM clones of Stancor 3801.

Here are two amps I finished recently, my first foray into a peudo-original design (although I'm sure it's been done before), a 5e3 power section and PI with a BF deluxe preamp modified to have a colder sound, more glassy. Turned out great! CNC milled on my little diy CNC basswood faceplates. Warehouse G12C in the Aqua one and a Celestion G12H

My John Mayer Signature reverb build.

I posted this here when I completed it mid-2014, but maybe later arrivals might not mind seeing it again.
It is a complete Ampeg SVT preamp (actually an SVP-CL) built on turret board in a 1U chassis.

My John Mayer Signature reverb build.
:icon_biggrin:What did you use to cover the cabinet?
It made me wonder if anyone here has built an amp with Kustom tuck-and-roll decor.
If not, I may need to do that.

Vibrolax,
Awesome SVT job. I am definitely going to build one of them.
As to the rest, there are some very talented cabinet makers, upholsterers and artists around this place.

These are two versions of the "Bad Dog". Just finished the black one and loving the color combo the guy chose!

Love the amp & guitar in the sand picture!
I've seen many acoustics but I'm picturing myself getting out of the water and looking over at a crazy guy carrying such a nice electric set-up to the salty sand & water's edge!? :w2:

+1 on loving the red & white Tolex! That curve is very cool :occasion14:

My wife and I were in Laguna beach to deliver an amp, so I brought this along and thought I'd get some "beach" pictures... We're taking picture at sunset as the tide is coming in and this couple is walking by. The guy yells "hey, my buddy plays in a band, got any business cards?" Just then this HUGE wave comes in. The guy leaps over to the amp, grabs the guitar in one hand and snatches the amp in the other and lifts them way up just as the wave washes up over his ankles. What a save!!! Both guitar and amp would have been under 4" of salt water, and that's my favorite strat!! :P
-
OMG! Laguna is usually pretty tranquil & mostly a very small shorebreak even when the tide is rising. But what a nightmare if that had happened?! Things just aren't the same after a salty bath - I'm a testament to that :l2:

WOW !!
Did you went to church to light a few candles to thank ?

No need for candles...just a quick "THANKS!!!!!!!". lol.
Srsly, I was thankful. The amp did get a little sand in the bottom, but nothing a good vacuuming couldn't handle.

6AK6 5E3/6G3. The volume and tone control gets flipped using a four pole switch so you get the classic 5E3 controls or the 6G3 voltage divider volume controls. Got loaned out and did not come home. One amp that I want to build again.

Work in progress of a 6G8, building it not as combo but head and speakers.
-
Is this just about amps??? :icon_biggrin:
-
Also not an amp, but I use it on amps to find voicing! The water-slide decals didn't set correctly in the oven, because I used one big sheet instead of discrete smaller decals. The wood chassis came from an already stripped apart Galvometer.

Cool!
You need a non-working knob that says something alchemic or esoteric
maybe
"audio humours"
"Astral inhibiter"
"Juju"
'widdershins' (knob only turns one direction...)
or maybe just a knob labelled 'magic' with the two extremes being 'black' and 'white'
-
I like more Chivas Regal than Black and White

Thats an awesome idea. We used to have a switch at work that was labeled Magic and More Magic. Even though it was not connected to anything, no one wanted to change it from More Magic... Love your thinking Toxophilite!

Just finished my first tube amp build. I started with a MojoTone kit and then realized I wanted to upgrade to better quality circuit boards and various other components. I decided to follow the Hoffman circuit and layout using turret boards for both the main board and the filter capacitor board. I also upgraded the hookup wire and many other small components. I used aluminum standoffs to mount the turret boards. I took my time and only worked on the amp when I was clear-headed...so it took about 8 months to complete. I installed it into a 1991 Fender '59 Bassman cab/speakers that I have and set aside the original chassis.
I am super proud of it. It's dead quiet and sounds incredible!

Building amps is like eating potato chips
you can't eat just one :icon_biggrin:
-
Yeah I can see why. I've been playing guitar for 23 years but only recently started getting the bug to work on stuff.
I started building custom tube microphones and power supplies, then refurbished an older Soundcraft 800B console, then decided I wanted a better version of my favorite amp...I can't afford a real 5F6A, nor would I want one.
Anyway, I am trying to decide which one to do next:
Ampeg VT-40
Marshall JCM2550 Silver Jubilee (I had a real one and stupidly stupidly stupidly sold it)
Thoughts? These are my 3 favorite amps so to speak so I know I want to build them both eventually. The Marshall would probably be easier than the Ampeg I think.
-
try a Supro 6420 Thunderbolt 35 Watts I have a schematic on Dougs list
-
Here is my one and only complete amp with the box. Will have more pics coming soon for the other amps once I get the cabinets made!
This is the first amp I ever built, A Fender champ as you all can see. I kept it completely stock like in the original. No grounding modifications although that may come later for further noise reduction. Otherwise it is a very quiet amp and sounds great! It's one of my favorites. Nice clean chimey at low volumes and nice crunch when overdriven.
I had the cabinet built for me by a local here in Ontario (actually just completed it a few days ago so it's still brand new) and he did a great job. I chose to do this color combination of ivory white and red levant with a black grille cloth and am very pleased with the results!
I finally decided on a speaker and went with Weber. There is an alnico 20W speaker in there and I chose the one that can easily be overdriven when cranked.
Weber has great service and this speaker looks and sounds great with the amp!
-
Nice! Definitely a party amp!
-
Thanks Eleventeen.
Lol I didn't think of that but yeah you're right it looks like a good party amp. It's small and portable and I can easily bring it to a beer party!
Initially I was thinking the red white combo might look too much like clown colors. But hey EVH had his frankenstrat painted the same. :m15
