Title: Piranha 6W Project
Post by: zendragon63 on September 06, 2010, 04:05:08 pm
Just finished an amp build this weekend and it certainly turned out different than expected. I try to have a plan but often get lost in the fine print. This intention was a PP version of the goofy Champ spin I going on last month. I also needed to try to use up some of the orphaned low power parts that have accumulated.  Took the Iron Chef approach and the challenge was using the small ma PT and the ~5 watt PP OT while still getting as much fullness and drive as I could. The only sinful indulgance was using the fancy Sozo caps. It was a first for me to work it out on paper, build it, make necessary changes (12AU7) and tune it for gain and response (with a scope) before ever hitting a chord though it. By the way that Tube Cad is awful handy.

I guess I must have gotten lucky because when I did finally crank it up, my WIFE--and she could be considered a rock critic--come in and yells at me that it is easily the best sounding rock and roll amp I have built in the two dozen or so to date. Unsolicited and she didn't want anything.   Must be moving in the right direction.

It's kinda of smaller fish that has some bite but you just don't feel the harshness. Chomp chomp. FWIW use as you see fit. Regards.

cool use of pentode option in preamp and the tone stack look interesting. Got any soundbytes yet?
