Mustang style tremolos any good?
« on: October 17, 2010, 12:35:09 am »
I am seriously thinking about buying a Mustang style copy.
There is a whole lot of stuff about that guitar I like but I know zero about the tremolo.
Is it good?
I don't expect to to any dive bombs with it but just some normal wear, shred, and tear.

The trem itself is pretty functional, but the bridge sucks.  A lot.  In a bad way.  Very bad.  They rock, which means they don't come back to the same place, which means they go out of tune.  WAY out of tune.

If you are going down that route, I highly recommend getting the bridge replaced with a MASTERY BRIDGE.  I've mentioned them here before, so I won't go into a lot of detail, but they make that style of bridge not only functional (which would have been a pretty major achievement in its own right!), but actually makes them exceptional for most uses.  If you are doing Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai sorts of dive bombs and such, you are going to need a Floyd Rose to be happy, but for most people that is probably overkill.

Gabriel

Full Disclosure:  While I have no financial stake in the Mastery Bridge (unless you buy it from me, of course), it is made and sold by an employee of our shop.  I receive no money for recommending it, and only suggest it because it is an excellent product, and is pertinent to the subject at hand.

Thanks for the all the insight.
Yes,the bridge movement was what I was wondering about.
That bridge Co. solution looks great and makes all the sense in the world.
If I end up with a guitar I'll be sure to check it out again.
