Lost Thread - Speaker Cab Switching using Auto Dimmer Switch
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:50:58 am »
I'm having trouble finding an old thread.  I has probably expired, or maybe it was all just a dream!

Someone asked about a footswitch to switch between speaker cabinets.

PRR (I think) posted a diagram of how to do it using an automobile hi-beam dimmer switch. The old style that were mounted on the floor.

I liked the idea, and even stopped by the auto parts store and picked up the switch at the time, but that's as far as I got.  I can't find the diagram on my hard drive, or the thread.

Any help?

I remember that thread. The dimmer switch is just a simple SPDT type (3 lugs). Just connect the common lug to the amp and connect a switched lug to cab #1. Connect the other switched lug to cab #2.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Oh, ok, nuthin' fancier than that then, huh?  that would explain why I didn't save the diagram.  Many thanks Sluckey.

Hey, everybody. Long time, no post. I've been taking care of business. Was thinking of building a switch like this. Is there any specific reason for using the automotive dimmer switch or could a regular SPDT switch be used? Thanks!

You need a high current capacity switch for speaker switching, especially if you're gonna use a footswitch (implies hot switching). The cheap/rugged auto headlight hi/lo beam switch is up to the task.

You can find other rugged high current push-off/push-on switches, but they may be pricey.

Thanks, Sluckey. Will it cause any popping when switched? If so, is there a way to counter that?
