Speaker for TOS ?
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:44:52 am »
Hi everybody,
I am going to build a head cab for the amp and need a speaker cab.  I will be making the cabinet.  I read that Geezer used an Eminence Legend in a closed back ported cab.  His clips do sound good.  I forget what Tubnit said he was using.  It seems that the Heritage G12-65 is popular with these type of amps.  I am looking for other suggestions for a suitable match to the amp.  I have always had combos with open backs.  I am not opposed to building a closed back ported box but I would have to figure all of that out.  Building an open back speaker cab seems more simple.

I have used both an Emminence Red, White and Blues  ........ and a Emminence
Cannabis Rex.  I think at home the R,W & B  sounds best.  With the band, I think the Cannabis Rex cuts thru a little better since we have a loud keyboard player.

I had a Celestion super 65 in my TOS and it sounded OK,

But when I hooked it up to my "Mule" speaker cab I loved it LOTS.

Speaker cab is closed back ported . Specs can be found on the AX84 site. Lots of thought went into their design.

Cab is loaded with an Eminence Wizard (redcoat)

I've used Wizards on my last 3 builds, they are very punchy and have a very flat response. I feel they are a very neutral sounding speaker and doesn't color the amps voicing as much as others.

For less than $100 delivered to your door, I think you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Thanks for the info stingray_65.  I went to the site and found this.    http://www.ax84.com/corecabinets.html  Is this the one you made?  It looks simple enough.  It has reasonable dimensions so I may give it a shot.  The Eminence speakers do seem like a lot of bang for your buck.

YUP

That cab is designed specifically for high efficiency speakers like the Wizard.

The only thing I did different was to offset the speaker 1 inch up and 1 inc to the left to avoid possible resonance, unlikely, but I wasn't taking chances.

The cab I built wasn't as pretty as I usually make, I want to keep this one as my reference cab to test my amps on.

I also made an extra panel on the back and cut the port in it. That way when I want a different port or an open back I can just change out the panel and see how it responds.

I believe that a few guys here have also made that cab and been pretty happy with it.

I love when guys plug in a small SE amp into it and all of a sudden it gets LOUD!

Thanks for the information guys.  I will try the Wizard.  I did like the clips on the eminence web page.  I liked the Private Jack a lot also.  I do thend to take those things with a grain of salt.  It will be the first Eminence to try for me.  The price is good.  I always worry about my sound being too bright.  I am a strat man and too bright is something that seems to come easy for me.     I will make the cab from pine and cover it.    Let's see how long it takes me to get it done!  I am sure it will be longer that most of you guys.

I'm building mine as a head too.  I figured I'd take the amp around to a few guitar shops and studios and try out different cabs.

Here is my speaker cab mostly finished.  It is made the same dimensions as the cab at the AX84 website.  In the end I just bought an unfinished cab (solid pine and dovetailed, very nice) and covered it myself.  I am happy with the way it turned out and wanted to brag a little.  I used water-based contact cement.  I am not sure if I like that stuff.  The corners are difficult but the chrome covers any uglyness.  The grill cloth is more like paper strands woven together than a fabric.  I like the way it looks but it was tough to work.  It doesn't strech much.  I wished I had a few more hands when doing the grill cloth.  My amp pretty far along I just need to do the hard part and wire everything inside the chassis.   I hope to finish it by Christmas.

RealNice!

Not affraid of a challenge are you!

That Cane speaker grill is a bear to work, and getting it as flat and straight as you did is amazing, ESPECIALLY for a first time.

So if that wasn't enough of a challenge, you threw in some piping too!

I'd built about half dozen cabs or more before I tried my hand at piping!

It is VERY obvious you took a lot of time on this project and moved slowly and carefully.

I would have liked to seen the cab construction. Dove tailed joinery is beautiful. a shame to cover it.

As far as the corners go, they are a bit difficult. I've got maybe 20 cabs now under my belt and have yet to make 8 perfect corners in a row. Like you've said, those corners can hide a ton of ugly :icon_biggrin:

On a couple I've used vinyl floor adhesive from Lowes, which is the same thing I found out later as the water based contact adhesive (ammonia like smell) .

It was my least favorable to work with, but I will say I found it to be tenacious.

The last cab I built I used hot hide glue. I'm in love now with it and think it may be THE way to go. The heat from the glue softens the vinyl nicely and lets me conform it to inside curves and compound radii very nicely. The drawbacks is you to work in sections, quickly, REAL quick! and don't miss a bubble or a glob under the tolex!

One of these days, I'll have joinery as nice as Tubenits and be able to do what he does, he showcases his construction and foregoes the tolex. They end up looking very much like fine furniture.

Great Job!

I just need to do the hard part and wire everything inside the chassis.

Judging from your mechanical skills this part should be a breeze for you!
Post pics as you go!

Thanks for the kind words guys.  I have made thngs for as long as I can remember.   Most every year I pick a "challenge" project that pushes me to learn new things and gain new skills.  I do spend a a lot of time planning and trying to figure out everything so that I have the best chance for success.
I bought the cab from http://www.trmguitarcabs.com/.  Solid pine constructed with half-blind dovetails, a nice cab indeed.  Tim was friendly and easy to deal with.
