Footswitchable gain/overdrive boost
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:44:35 pm »
Yesterday I picked up a Christmas gift to myself - a Yamaha T50C combo - the one with the pre-SLO style circuit designed by Michael Soldano. Great little amp. Two channels, nice cleans, tons of gain, fully independent EQ/Vol/Reverb controls for each channel. Check one out if you get a chance. It uses a single on/off footswitch to change channels but that wasn't included. I stopped by Guitar Center on the way home and grabbed a generic two button footswitch with a TRS plug. I have been thinking about what I can do with that other switch if I install a TRS jack in the amp.

This is one idea. I'm thinking about adding an overdrive/gain boost to the lead channel by simply adding a resistor to ground path of the overdrive gain control that can be bypassed by the switch. The amp has a nice rhythm crunch with the lead channel gain at 5 and a nice lead tone with the lead channel gain at 7. I have attached a photo to illustrate what I mean (sorry for the crummy photo but it's the only schematic I have). Seems like it should work but I wanted to offer it up for any second opinions in case there is something I am missing. It could also be implemented as a pre-set but switchable raw control in the lead channel's mid control ground path. A third idea is to insert it in the master volume pot's ground path for a volume boost. They all would be essentially the same installation as the pictured pre amp gain control.
Some of the most amazing music in history was made with equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.
