Any suggestions for my next build (hoffman AC15)
« on: August 06, 2014, 06:43:59 am »
Hey guys,

My 5 watt turned out great. Im waiting for the faceplate for it and then I will post some photos.

Im researching my next build. I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions.

Im looking to build something with a nice lead tone. I like the blues jr and I like the ac15. The problem with the AC 15 is all the builds I see only have a tone knob and I would really like to see a tone stack on there. I also wouldn't mind a pre and post gain if possible to.

Got anything?  :icon_biggrin:

Look at Hoffman's AC-30. It has the top boost channel with a tone stack. Just drop two of the output tubes for AC-15.

I recently built a 1960 AC-15. No tone stack but I don't miss it. Hoffman makes a board for this also. The top boost channel also appeared on later versions of the AC-15.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks Slucky. This looks like somthing I would really be interested in. I'd like to see some photos of some finished projects if anyone has any. If like to see how people might have laid out the caps.

Would it be benifical for me price wise to downsize the iron if I only go with the 15 watts rather than 30 or is the iron the same regardless?

You would need to change the PT and OT.

I'm going to put my parts list together for this in a week or so. I broke my hand over the weekend so I'm pushed back on all my projects. I was looking the schematic and noticed the top boost has a cathode follower tone stack which i think was common in vox and marshalls. But i was curious if the tone stack controls the signal to the regular channel?

What little bit of research I've done, I've found these transformers. Ive used Hammond in all of my builds so far. Unless anyone has any suggestions. I will be removing 2 output tubes and making this a 15watt instead of 30 watt. Ive been tracing down the schematic nonstop and learning it as much as i can before i start the build.

I think this will be my first build on my bread board I'm building. I think I will cut out the normal channel. Also....may alter the tone stack and add a mid. Any objections to that? Maybe try using a similar 2204 tone stack?
