Board feet question
« on: April 23, 2015, 11:11:02 am »
Ok, so I've poked around on the interwebz and have read some articles and apparently they haven't helped me get it through my thick skull since I'm posting here bothering you guys. I'm hoping maybe someone here can use some Crayons and help this putz out.

So if I want to build a speaker cab as the following
22" wide
22" tall
12" deep

We'll assume I'm going to get 1" thick hardwood at my local exoctic wood dealer. I'll plane it down from there. It will have a TV front and closed back so basically a complete box if you will for board feet purchase purposes.

How many board feet do I need for this project?

 :embarrassed:

You will need 2 BF for each side panel, top, and bottom. So that's 8 BF.

A solid back panel will be 4 BF.

A solid front panel will be 4 BF.

That's a total of 16 BF.

Two boards that are 1x12x8' should do it.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I don't know why I was thinking there was something more to it than multiplying WxH divided by 144.

I guess I was thinking there was some weird way the supplier defines board feet. Sort of like when you buy a 2x4 it is not 2" x 4" kind of thing.

Thanks for the response Steve. Now I'll go save up more money.

That only works for 1" thick boards. 12"x12"x1"=1BF, but 12"x12"x2"=2BF.

1" and 2" thickness is easy to calculate. 5/4" thickness is a little harder.  :icon_biggrin:
