Phoenix build
« on: November 07, 2022, 01:11:43 pm »
Hey all,

I've build the Phoenix amp, thanks Sluckey for the plans!

I reused all the stuff for it from others builds and it turned out great.

I would like to know if it's "normal" that the Fender preamp (3-ish on the volume) is much louder than the Ampeg (7-ish on the volume)
With Regards,

Auke

It's been a while since I heard that amp. I don't remember there being much of a difference in loudness. Surely I would have noticed if it was a big difference. The Ampeg is warmer sounding and more "polite" than the in your face, bold sound of the Fender. Maybe that contributes to the perceived loudness?    :dontknow:

Thanks Steve for your reply.

I'm afraid that's not what I'm hearing. The Ampeg side sounds way less full and noticeably less volume. I will check the wiring tonight.

The darker vol side is always less vol than the bright vol side. The amp's a 1987 Marshall, with EL84's. My 6V6 Plexi's two volumes act as you described though maybe not as much as you described...? Maybe you can change the cathode cap on first stage on the dark side to 220uf range.

EDIT: SORRY WRONG AMP, WAS THINKING NOVEMBER

I've carefully checked the wiring/components etc., comparing it to the schematic and the layout. Everything seems to check out ok (although I had a 220K from the wiper of the bass-pot to ground. Changed it  out for a 270K as per schematic/layout).

All the voltages are more or less as noted on the schematic.

The amp sounds fine to me.

The difference in volume (loudness) is still there.

Disregarding knob numbers, do you have enough volume for the Ampeg preamp?

I think volume/loudness wise there's not a big issue, it gets plenty loud. It's just that de Fender side gets way louder. Not a big deal I guess, just wondering if it is what might be expected with the two preamps. On the Fender preamp I've got to roll down the bass quit a bit.

Auke
