I did that and at the same time increased the filtering.  I also used Deluxe Reverb iron.  Had the effect of giving the amp more headroom and none of the good Deluxe overdrive.  I am going to take it out and put Tweed Deluxe iron in the amp.  Part of the magic is in the undersized iron being taxed hard.  Of course if you want an amp with a lot more headroom it may work for your purposes.  It just didn't work for what I want from the amp.

Actually I believe im running a DR output tranny in mine too ( its 6600 ohms) and im liking the GZ-34 rectifier atm. I think that anything you do, it will run out of headroom and distort, I just want to love the distortion, im not trying to recreate a classic, just wanna have an amp that sounds awesome, and this does ......just didnt know what a choke would do tonally, maybe ill try it to see for myself :)

I don't think a choke will affect tone at all. Compression, sustain and touch response possibly/probably. You may not get more actual headroom, but the amp probably will feel tighter with less sag/ compression.

Power tube Screen grid voltage should go up some unless you have a choke with relatively high resistance.

It all depends on what you want from your amp.  If you are happy with it that is all that matters.  Mine sounded great it just broke up at too high of volume.  I have a lot of high wattage amps.  For me I want my 5e3 to break up at lower volume.  Just based on what you are trying to accomplish. It will sound good with a choke, just a little different.  You may like it.
