Capacitor outer foil orientation
« on: August 08, 2016, 10:10:07 pm »
I know this topic has been discussed and I have read all of those threads. I test my capacitors for outer foil using an amp and cable. Then I mark the outer foil end. As I was reading the thread about capacitors changing tone I noticed Tubenit mention correct orientation for a particular cap location.  As I looked at the picture he attached I realized I hadn't installed my caps correctly in my original TOS. I went and looked and sure enough, my black dots all face the same direction.

I'm not sure which direction the outer foil should be facing in every case. Attached is the layout with little black dots marking the direction I have them facing. Can you all help point out the ones that need to be turned?

The amp is very quite so I'm surprised to discover this and anxious to see if it makes a difference. I also have a .02 Musicap, a full set of OD, and a full set of Dijons to do some cap swapping so I want to get them right.

Thanks,
Aaron

Did you read the thread on cap orientation in ARCHIVES that has all the diagrams and photos about cap orientation?

I've attached a GIF file showing how I would orient them.   Having said that, IF you are happy with how quiet your amp is, then maybe leave it alone?

with respect, Tubenit

I agree 100% with that orientation you've shown.  I understood two cases you decide which way to go:

1. foil to ground
2. foil to lower impedance (previous stage)

That's pretty much it.

If the cap goes to ground, the foil side shunts any potential noise it takes in to ground.
If it comes into the cap it won't go on to the next stage and be multiplied/magnified if you have the second case.
