6550 Vibro Champ?
« on: May 09, 2019, 02:22:38 am »
I’ve been collecting parts for a super budget Vibro Champ build for years and am about ready to get started. I’ve built tons of effects, modular synths, done repairs on amps and reverb units, but this is my first amp build.

My plan was to make this diode rectified to simplify a bit and to save the cost of the tube. I had found one of these Basler BE32901001 PTs that you see on eBay but I think the voltage might be way to high for a 6v6. Would using a 6550 instead make this PT usable in this circuit?

yes
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

 is it really that simple? I was expecting to have to change the values of something at the least.

The answer to your question was that simple.

Building a champ with 6550 will be a bit more involved.  :icon_biggrin:

jjasilli, I did see that discussion of the Basel, it didn’t look like anything ever came of it. I also saw something on here about using a lower voltage center tapped secondary wired in series out of phase to reduce voltage of a higher voltage secondary but I couldn’t find any other info on how to actually do that.

Has anyone successfully built an amp with one of these cheapo PTs?

Without knowing current handling capacity you're buying a pig in a poke.

Re voltage reduction you may be referring to a bucking transformer.  Search this Forum or Google it.  Sluckey has great info posted.
