Hi Everybody!
« on: April 21, 2017, 01:02:53 am »
Ok, I probably shouldn't use a quote from a TV show that I haven't watched in years to introduce myself but what's done is done. No going back now!

Anyway. a little about me. I'm currently living in eastern New Mexico, basically west Texas, was happily living in San Diego but my fiancé up and got accepted to graduate school here and not there so we're here for ~2 years.

I'm a photographer by trade, well, I was until we moved. I've been refubning/ fixing vintage camera gear (mostly lenses and film cameras) on the side to help pay for my personal film habit.

Since we moved I have finally finished a project that I started way back in HS, a point to point 5F1 scratch build into a mid-80s Marshall SS 1x12 combo. Now that that has been finished and working well, I'm looking to a few more while I'm stuck out here on the prairie.

1) Pull the 5F1 build out, stick it into another smaller chassis I have since acquired and insert parallel 12AU7 for minimal volume jamming. Switching on the fly without pulling tubes would be ideal but I'm not sure if my skills are up to that.

2) Use the trannies from a beater Stromberg Carlson Signet 22 in the Marshall combo and build an 18W November/JCM800/Stout/Orange front end with a PPIMV or VVR. When I was playing out, I had a JCM800 version of the 1959 circuit and liked it. Didn't like the TSL100 I had for a while nearly as much until it was nearly cranked, and I really liked the Rockerverb 50 (6V6) I had with a Splawn cab. I don't play as heavy of music now but I still like that thick Orange or earlier Marshall tone.

2a) Figure out what to do with the Signet 22 chassis. I would also like to build a reverb at some point so maybe start on that?

3) Do a bit of tweaking to optimize my already changed up '66 Bandmaster. It was nearly all replaced before I bought it in Minneapolis in '02 or thereabouts. Mostly Orange drops now, I'd like to change up voicing for one channel and slow down the vibe, no drilling of course as it hasn't been abused or modded and I don't intend to start. Also, I want to either find a proper black tolex cab for it or build one. Been playing it through the Marshall 1x12 since I sold the drip edge 2x15 cab I had for it at one point. (Rockerverb through the Splawn with Bandmaster through 2x15 was the best combination I've ever given part of my hearing to!)

I finally joined here by prompt of a member that saw a comment I made on a YouTube video which walked through some mods that the author did for a customer's Bassman head.

Heresy, Heresy, West Texas and Eastern NM?
I always thought West Texas was Texas west of Pecos and Del Rio Texas and south of Malaga NM.  Marty Robinson, sang about the West Texas town of El Paso.

My guess, you are in either Clovis or Portales, and is attending school at Eastern NM University, home of the Greyhounds.  Good area, Buddy Holley and the Crickets spent some time in the area you're now living.

Welcome to the forum, and don't forget to try that 72 oz steak in Amarillo, its free if you can eat it fast enough.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm indeed in Portales for ENMU but my fiancé is the Greyhound, grad student in the speech/language dept. We've driven by the Novak studios but haven't stopped there or the museum. I keep meaning to make the ham radio meet up in Clovis, but schedules haven't lined up yet.

Thanks for the Amarillo tip, sounds like a fun thing to try once.

Pinhole, I have a little Sharan 35mm DIY cardboard cam but that has been the extent of my experience. I have a 4x5 Speed but haven't used it enough. Too many hobbies and too many cameras!

Did some revamp on my 5f1, cleaned up the layout and replaced the power tube bypass cap which I think I had popped with soldering heat when I first built most of the amp 10+ years ago. Went with two 100uF in series and 10uF on first stage of 12AX7 so I can't say for sure what did what but I like it. It seems like it is much less raspy, OD is smoother and everything just sounds better. I reworked quite a bit so I may have corrected something that was previously wrong.

Now to take some photos to share!

Welcome Fixcinater!  Pentax 6x7 here but collecting dust.... Lots of old medium format boxes of various makes also collecting dust.  It's pretty depressing when a $200 digital can take a better pic than my multi thousand dollar body with multi multi thousand dollar glass....  Plus all the good medium format labs are gone.... :BangHead:

Welcome, sounds like that may be P2Pamps video channel, I've seen most of his stuff, and I do recall bassman mods.   I too am a photo/video nerd, I do most with my Canon 5D MKIII or my wife's Sony A7RII.  I do videos as well under my FrenchieFilms moniker  https://www.youtube.com/c/FrenchieFilms (Sorry I self promote too much lol).

Sounds like you have some exciting projects coming!

Had a chance to buy a speed graphics with 120/220 back and individual film canisters,  cheap at $99.  Didn't buy it because I told owner it was worth quite a bit more.  Owner was willing to let me have it cheap based on an oral agreement.  He still sold it cheap at $350.
