5E3 baffle board question
« on: June 25, 2017, 09:00:26 am »
So, the floating baffle board thing.  Is it suspended just by the 4 bolts through the front, or does it sit on the bottom panel of the amp, and the bolts just hold it in place? Does it touch the top panel and/or sides?

I was just thinking of the weight - 12" speaker hanging on it - those two strips with the bolts on are only glued to the top and bottom panels of the amp.

Probably a very obvious question but I can't tell from cab photo's I've looked at.

There are 2 cleats 3/8 on. The left and right and 1 inch facia top and bottom. These are on the 3/8 with the speaker cutout. 2 screw top and 2 on bottom.
Some say the board is Burch, but the one I owned was pine.

It is this looseness that gives the tweeds more ambiance. Some like to call it more dimensional. No tweed head will ever sound the same unless your cab is made this way. Doesn't mean it sounds bad, just not the same.

Are those 1" facia strips taking the weight of the baffle board assembly though?  Or is it sitting on the bottom panel of the amp, and the 4 x facia screws are just keeping it in place?

I've read use birch ply as a compromise between looseness and strength.

Yes. The baffle has about 1/16" clearance at top and bottom so the 1/4" thick facia strips and four 8-32 screws at the top and bottom are the total support for the baffle.

Here's a pic of a 1957 Harvard 5F10 that shows the baffle and screws. Might be hard to tell but there is about 1/16" clearance on all sides of the baffle. I have two repro 5E3 cabs that are built exactly like this old 5F10 cab.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Gotcha, and thanks for the pic.  First one I've seen that clearly shows the board/mounting.  Some of the cabinet plans I've seen show the board pretty much same size as the inside of the box, others show slightly smaller.  I get that acoustically it should be suspended.  I'll need plenty of strong wood glue in there!

I don't have the woodworking tools and skills to do all of it.  Friend of mine is a carpenter so for cash and/or beer he'll hopefully do at least the tricky bits for me - e.g. the finger jointing.

Thanks.

Just been taking mine out for solo outdoor gig. Low volume...but outdoor definitely pushes things. A couple vertical cleats up each side would make more gig friendly for those backwards falls, and tube keepers are essential on all, and especially power/rectifier. They're hanging by thread every time I get there. New build, new sockets, anvil type padded case....still gotta push em back in. Extra deep bass notes rattled, but not on my carvin v16 (ran em stereo. V16 has greenback, deluxe has Weber sig. Both ceramic 25s to my recall. Gonna run through tubes...might b rectifier drop, might be cabinet, crap pre tube/s...but carvin with 2 el84's was strong, and cabinet is smaller, but solid built. Hope this isn't a thread jack....just in interest of gigging, n whatnot. Will follow up  after gig today if interested/time allows

Think it's Mojotone. And sounds good for guitar, and I know bass notes weren't on top of list, but fairly similar amps, outputs...and 5e3 is not ratty distorted type for guitar, sounds sorta JTM45 usually.
