Capacitor Question
« on: July 27, 2017, 01:37:56 pm »
Hello-

Not for sure if this is the appropriate forum or not but I am attempting a Fender 6G3 build.  In looking at the schematic most caps are 400 v.  Building my parts list through the Hoffman store I don't see any 400 v caps but I know a higher voltage rating will work.  Will the higher rating impact tone?  If so, in what way?  Also, the schematic calls for 1 .0005-400 cap but I cannot seem to find it in the Hoffman store.  Is there a comparable cap that I am overlooking?

Thanks,

JLS

Higher V ratings won't impact tone.

For the .0005, use the 500pf silver mica. (make sure it's not actually .005, in that case you'd use a .0047) Looked it up, you're right.

the 630 volt rating caps are so much cheaper now than "back in the day". Back then everything was more expensive to manufacture, so nothing was ever overbuilt. Now, they crank 'em out by the 100,000s, maybe millions. New caps are much smaller than ones from the 60's, too.

Tapping into the inner tube.

agreed, it's never going to change tone, the tonal shaping is the capacitance itself.  the voltage rating is just how much current and voltage the leads and plates can take in the physical leaf construction itself.
