Drilling a board without a mask

Has anyone ever drilled a turret board without a mask? If so, what did you use to ensure proper hole placement?

 1. draw out your board layout on paper
2. stick the paper it to the board
3. drill the holes

I attach a guide to the table of the drill machine to slide along the board, that ensures that the wholes at least are in one row.

Look up Casey4s tutorial, very nice with photos, there is one about board building...

Ive done it casey4s's way and it works greaat, just one tip tho. when you use tape to adhere the paper to he board the paper lifts as fillings start to collect. after doing many baords this way ive started using spray adhesive, the paper doesnt lift and your hole stay nice and straight. usually the paper will just peel off when your done. youll have to use acetone to wipe the board down when you done to remove the adhesive, if you dont the board will become a lint trap.

Thanks, I've looked at Casey4s. Now the question is; Do I use the Hoffman cirucit drawing? If so, any recommendations on how to get it 1:1. I've tried and it hasn't come out correct. Or, should I use the original circuit layout?

cant remeber the exact dimensions of the spacing, its just short of being .5", maybe someone else can post this. what i was doing was saving the layout and reopening in a graphic utility and expanding 100% for standard letter size. after awhile i just started using 4=1" graph paper as i started to restructure the layout to eleiminate alot of redundant turrets. if i where you id just go w/the graph paper and use the dimensions that accomodates the components.

  Circuit Board drillmask spacing
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the info. After carefully studying the Hoffman master drill template I've been able to determine that the spacing between holes is .390625". This is true except for the 4 bias pot locations and the upper and lower turret hole. The Upper holes are spaced .195313" from the edge of the board.

I think I can work this grid out on my computer and print an paper template to drill from.

Thanks for the help.

well there ya go, one thing tho, on the preamp cathode bypass caps mkes siure you have enuff lead and width space. everytime i pick up more caps for this the dimensions vary.

Make a layout on paper, stitch small holes trough the marks. Fix the paper with tape to the board and mark the holes with a waterproof pen onto the board. Remove the papermask and drill........ Next project you can use your mask again

The result you can find on:

Here's the Doug's story about turret spacing:
