Fix for crooked tubes?
« on: June 17, 2018, 04:45:11 pm »
I got some Russian 6n3c/6p3s(6L6) types and a couple are crooked in relation to the base. One is fairly bad and I wondered if I can just heat the pins with soldering iron and adjust? Is it that simple?I suppose I can just live with it the sound is good. More like a 5881 than a 6L6 in tone at least compared to my on hand tubes. My 6L6g is noticeably warmer cleaner and more chimney . But like my 5881 the Russian tubes are hotter with more bite and earlier breakup. They even lean towards el34s a tad. Quite satisfied except the slight crooked tube and slight base looseness which I am sure super glue would fix.

Any ideas on fixing the skew?

might google, think I've seem pin straightener jigs out there, otherwise, I just take my time with a good pair of needle-nosed pliers, make a tweak, plug into a "test" socket", repeat
Went Class C for efficiency

if the glass is disconnected from the base you can disconnect pins with iron, position the glass correctly

resolder and fix glass to base with superglue

if the glass is wrongly connected to the base trying to move it can damage in an irreversible mode the tube

and I think it will be better to don't touch it and leave as is

Thanks. I was just wondering if this was something that could be fixed. I usually buy tubes from world tube company online they had 3 of the 6n3c Russian 6L6s for 3.95 each from the grab bag section. It said may have minor imperfections and loose base but they are nos one from 1953 one from 1962 and one from 1966. They sound really good as described above I spose  the skewed glass doesn't effect the tone.

If you guys haven't already you should check out world tube company they have nice stuff for good prices. Tubes are always $3 shipping whether you buy 1 or 100. They come well packed in individual tube boxes if not original box they are in white boxes and are usually  marked with the gm value they tested at. They have a good selection and it's divided into nos  and used/tested with sections for  u.s.a., european, Russian, military, Hammond organ tubes and automobile types. I buy most of my tube there and will continue to as I haven't got a dud yet

Drink more beer. It will look fine.

It really is NOT a problem. Some amps (hi-fi) mounted tubes on 45 degree angles and you didn't have to tip the speakers catty-corner to get sound out. A 2 degree slant, bah-- if you play on my street all your "straight" tubes will tilt more than that.

It just looks funny. Look at your audience, not your tube.
