Combining multiple boards using cut lines
« on: March 19, 2024, 09:09:06 am »
Here is the link to the .diy file analyzer program.
https://hoffmanamps.com/php/DIYLC/DiyFileAnalyzer.php

If you have multiple boards, you can combine them into one .diy file using cut lines.
You can have custom boards made up to 20 inches in length.
So you can combine several small boards as long as the total length is not over 20 inches.

You can use what ever grid spacing you want as long as you can place your cut lines where you want them.
I use a grid spacing of 0.0625 inches to place cut lines.
0.625 inch is half if 0.125 inch.

Here is how you set your grid spacing.
You can also set several other settings for your .diy file here.

File - Edit project Settings - Grid Spacing
Layers - Board - Lock - Uncheck to unlock

Here is an example of a customers custom board.
He wanted a quantity of two boards made of the board show below.

I will show you how to make a custom board file with two of these boards.

Now we are going to create another copy of the board and holes.

Go to layers and make sure the board layer is un-locked.
See the image in post #1 on how to un-lock the board layer.

Select and Copy your board and all the holes.
Paste the board next to the board you copied with a 0.125 inch gap between them.

Notice than there is a line right in the middle of that 0.125 inch gap
That is because we set our grid spacing to 0.625 inches which is half of 0.125 inches

Now add a cut line between the two boards.
Cut lines are in the Connectivity folder.

Paste the cut line on the .0625 inch grid line.
The cut line is half way between the .125 inch spacing.

You need to leave a bit of space around the cut line because I have to cut the boards apart with a saw and then square up the cuts on a large disc sander.
The saw cut and sander will consume the space around the blue cut line.

You can only have one board in a board layer in a custom .diy file that you want to have made.
The .diy file analyzer program will give you an error if you have two boards in the Board layer.

So we need to delete the board on the copied and pasted board.

I like to add a marker so I know where the new board will end.
I added a small red dot to indicate where I need to end the board after I delete the copied board.
You can do it by eye if you don't want to add a marker like I did.

In the image below you can see that I have selected the copied board and deleted it.

Now we need to drag the board from the original board out to make it the full length.

Grab the lower right corner of the board and drag it out to the marker.
You can delete the marker now if you used one.

Now you have one long board with all the holes and a cut line.
You can now have your custom board made using the .diy file analyzer program.
The analyzer program is linked in post #1.
