Aa964 princeton
« on: March 30, 2019, 08:18:26 pm »
Just working on an AA964 Princeton amp. Nice tone bit it's really not loud at all.
They supposed to be that quiet? You have to turn it up to 10 to get the same level as a PR at 5. I know it's missing the reverb gainstage but that much difference?
  Never played one beforr

They are loud amps - something must be wrong if you are turning it to 10 and think it's not loud.

My 5F2A Princeton is unbearable at 10 indoors. More like a 1 or 2 at most is what I use. It might help if you describe the place you are playing it at, and the speaker. Have you verified with another amp that the guitar doesn't have a volume pot, switch, or pickup problem.

Apart from the name, with the 5F2a and AA1164 I think it's an apple to orange type of comparison. They are rather different amps, eg lossy BF tonestack, push pull power amp.

I have no experience either but you could try temporary raw control or tone stack lift and see how much louder it gets.

I assume you have tried swapping tubes? If so, I guess I would next check voltages against the schematic. That should help identify the issue. If it doesn't I would follow one of the good debugging guides and systematically eliminate things, as there are a number of things that can cause low volume.

I figured it out. Apparently the fellow tried to put in a new cap can and had it wired incorrectly. Screens were starving.
It's loud and clean now. Tremolo wasn't right before either but it's sweet as can be now.
Just gotta convince him to dump the Celestion Gold and put in a Fender voiced speaker

Cool. Things can go a lot worse than that with an incorrectly wired cap can, eh? If not wanting to spend a lot on a speaker, I think the Weber Signatures are good. I've been hearing great things about Warehouse speakers, but have yet to try them.
