Need Help to Identify amp(It's Odd)
« on: July 21, 2019, 04:04:51 pm »
I just picked up an amp; which from the picture I thought had 4x6v6's as power tubes ...Not so it has 4x25L6GT's,  2x12ax7A and 1x12ay7I am pretty sure it was built in 1960 Has two transformers identical Philco's  some sort of bridge rectification. two channel's one marked " accordion"(2inputs) the other marked"for studio"(2inputs) each has separate tone and volume It has tremolo speed and intensity  One of the tone switches doubles as an on off switch No fuse. It made in the USA or at least the parts are.it has 2 10" alnico's . Again from the photo I thought someone recapped it and just left the caps hanging there NO (it was built that way) all three multi caps were mounted to that speaker they then were each wired to an octal socket used as a mounting terminal . It seem to be more than a valco P2Pin there ( more sophisticated?) I was thinking Sano but the chassis isn't black …..Any Help is appreciated in advance. It has Hummmm but sounds really good other than that . I will re-cap it and a three prong and put in a 1 amp fuse The on off on the tone switch is marked 1 amp  110  3 amp 220 decent plywood cabinet 1/2" but well made

2nd PRR looks like the PA tubes want lots more than 6.3v fil, guessing it's coming straight in from the wall  :dontknow:
it's fun to trace out circuits n sketch up a schematic, reverse engineering step 1  you won't even violate patent law :icon_biggrin:
Went Class C for efficiency

looks like a gibson. colors, cabinet, chassis & handle are gibson-ish. may be a later model EH 160 utilizing more "modern" tubes...  :dontknow:

I saw a Gibson that looked like it cabinet wise . Guild seems to have done something similar with those radio tubes. I don't have the time right now to mess with it ,but would still like to know what it is. I think it would make an awesome harp amp ,guitar too. The tone was great other than the hum which I assumed were the caps ….maybe not . But in the guild I saw posted it required an isolation transformer I think. that had 50L6GT's this has 25L6GT's .

25L6 is a 300mA heater. The 12xx7 tubes wired for 300mA take 6.3V. So this adds up to 118.9V, which is exactly 117V for practical purpose, which means this line-up WAS selected to run right off the wall.

25L6 can take 150V but is really intended to run on the 140V-105V typical of straight wall-power through a rectifier.

Unless there is a second large lump of iron (factory safety-mod or later alteration), I say this thing is a Shock Hazard. There may be some caps to reduce the available 60Hz current to "less than lethal" (by 1960s standards, when we snorted lead gas and had no seatbelts), but I wouldn't touch it today. (Especially as those caps go bad by shorting.)
