Traynor YCV40 repairs and solder type?
« on: July 24, 2019, 08:10:08 am »
I picked up a Traynor YCV40 that had the bad standby switch and crackling, humming, weird noises. I've repaired the noise, it was cracked solder joints. But I've read that they were manufactured using lead free solder and I used good old 60/40. I did NOT wick the old solder, I just touched it up and it works (so far). Is this an OK practice? The solder didn't seem to flow as readily, but the joints look good.
Should I;
 A. leave well enough alone, it's fine.
 B. Go back, wick out all of the solder and reflow with lead tin.
 or
C. Go back, wick out all of the solder and reflow with lead free.
D. Anything else?
I'm learning...

I guess the question is; Is it OK to repair lead free soldered boards with good old 60/40 solder?

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I did and it's working. Thanks Sluckey. And I had read the article you linked, but the answer was a little ambiguous. So in this case Google didn't exactly answer that.
